Tears at Cat's Heartbreaking Reaction to Late Owner's Wallet

A cat has captured hearts with her touching reaction to seeing her late owner's wallet. In a video shared by his daughter, Gem the cat sniffed the wallet intently before sitting on top of it protectively.

TikToker @deesuze, who has chosen to remain anonymous, lives in rural Ohio and took on Gem, who was around 8 years old after her father died in 2023.

"My dad and I always had a difficult relationship and had been estranged for a long time before one of his neighbors informed me of his advanced cancer and that he wanted to see me. I am so glad we shared the time, closure, and love that we did before he died," @deesuze told Newsweek.

Her father had two pets—Gem and a German shepherd named Jasper. The daughter assured her father that the pets would not end up in the shelter, and when Jasper found a loving home with the neighbor, @deesuze took in Gem.

"Gem was initially very defensive, having been declawed after being played with roughly by Jasper. It took a long time to get her to trust me, but now we have a mutually loving relationship. She hasn't fully integrated with my other three cats, but her home will always be with me," @deesuze explained.

Around a year since losing her father, @deesuze was dealing with estate matters when Gem saw the wallet.

"I was doing some paperwork in my room and had tossed his wallet on the bed. When I came back, Gem had jumped up and was sniffing it very intensely," she said. "I knew it was a special moment, so I started recording. It had been a long time since she had smelled anything of his, but it was so obvious that the wallet's scent was familiar, comforting, and emotional for her. When she finally laid down across it, I knew she was thinking of him and remembering 'her human.'"

The video was viewed more than 4.7 million times on TikTok, and people shared their reactions in the comments.

"Girl you got us all crying," said Emily.

Others shared similar stories: "My dad passed last June and mom's cat still lay in his seat waiting for him to come pet him," wrote viewer McCreight.

TikToker Grinless Cat said: "My mom's cat slept by her urn for almost 2 weeks. I don't know how she knew but she did."

Seeing the video resonate with so many people, @deesuze shared more about Gem and her relationship with her late father, including some funny anecdotes.

"When Dad adopted her, he was told she was a boy and named her Jim. Once he discovered she was a girl, he was debating whether to change her name. A friend suggested Gem, and everyone was happy," she said.

"I am still both shocked and touched that this little video has reached the hearts of so many people," she said. "I am also really pleased that only a very small percentage of the comments have been negative—and I have been deleting those without mercy."
