Heartbreak As 9 'Neonatal' Puppies Tossed Out of Car in Bag Like Garbage

Nine puppies have been rescued after they were thrown inside a bag "like garbage" from a vehicle in Broome County, New York.

A citizen initially mistook the bag on the side of the road for litter, but upon further inspection found nine neonatal puppies. Just 2 weeks old, their eyes and ears were not yet open when the young animals were abandoned on the side of the road.

"The puppies were found by a member of the public in a box that was in a bag on the side of the road. The individual stopped to pick up the bag thinking it was litter, and when she picked the bag up, she realized it was moving. Lo and behold, there were puppies inside," Amberly Ondria, shelter manager at the Broome County Humane Society told Newsweek.

Thankfully, the puppies were taken to The Broome County Humane Society where they could get the care they needed. "The puppies appeared to be in good health when they arrived at our facility. The individual who found them was able to provide feedings until they arrived at the shelter, where they were weighed, assessed for any immediate injuries, and then moved directly to foster care," said Ondria.

With no information about how or why the puppies ended up being dumped on the side of the road, the shelter is also still trying to figure out which breed the dogs are.

The shelter shared the discovery of the nine puppies on its Facebook page where residents have shared their fury at the abandonment.

"Nine puppies in a bag thrown out of a car just like garbage," the Facebook post said. "It's heartbreaking to think about the cruelty these innocent creatures faced.

In the comments on Facebook, people shared their reactions: "Unbelievable! People are just disgusting!" read one comment.

Another Facebook user wrote: "I can't believe humans are so cruel."

Now in foster care, the good news is that the puppies are doing well after a difficult start in life. "The puppies are all doing excellent! They are receiving an abundance of love and attention from a very experienced foster caretaker who is also a vet tech," Ondria said.

The puppies will remain in foster care until they are 8 weeks old. Once they have been vaccinated, spayed or neutered, they will be put up for adoption, giving them a chance at having a loving and permanent home.
