Hysterics at 'Dramatic' Dog's Reaction to Being Left Alone With Spare Human

At first, this video might seem like a sad scene of a dog left home alone, but when you notice she actually has some company, you can't help but laugh at its hilarious behavior.

In the TikTok clip shared to @itsjustmelody.daisy, a mini golden doodle can be seen standing on a sofa, anxiously looking at the door. It then occasionally looks back at the person filming before returning to look at the door and howling in despair.

The text layered over the clip, which has received 1.6 million views, reads, "Mom left and now you are stuck with the spare human," referring to her partner.

Newsweek discussed the July 24 video with dog trainer Joe Nutkins, who said the dog is suffering from separation anxiety. She has shared her top tips so owners can help reduce the level of stress for their furry friends.

5 Ways to Soothe a Dog Missing Its Owner

Nutkins, a co-director at U.K.-based Dog Training for Essex and Suffolk, offers the following tips:

  1. Make sure your dog has a cozy safe space it can go to that is available when you are home as well as when you are out. This can have its favorite bed, a roof (e.g., den, crate, under a table), and some of its favorite toys.
  2. Provide your dog with safe chews and toys. Not all dogs will play with toys on their own, but dogs that will chew a toy will find the action soothing and calming. They may only chew certain things like ice cubes, chew sticks, a Kong toy, etc., so make sure they have these in their cozy space.
  3. Do an activity with your dog at least half an hour before you go out. This can be a walk or offer interactive toys.
  4. Give your dog some background noise. This is less about giving your dog "company" and more about having a regular noise it may hear when you are home. Plus, it can help dilute external noises so if the dog manages to settle it isn't disturbed by something happening outside, which can then wake the dog and cause it to go back to worrying.
  5. Consider using a scent product to help. Dog Appeasing Pheromone and Pet Remedy both have a plug-in diffuser with a scent that helps thousands of anxious dogs. DAP works on pheromones, while Pet Remedy works with a scent known for calming. Plug-ins like this need to be plugged in and switched on all the time, not just when you go out, and should be in a room your dog uses a lot and ideally in a socket that is lower to the ground, as warm air rises and takes the scent with it.
