Keeping Your Dog Hydrated

How much water your dog requires will vary depending on the canine's age, weight and activity level.

A canine weighing around 20 pounds will typically need to drink anywhere between 10 and 20 ounces of water per day, or more than that on especially on active days, according to an April 2024 article by the American Kennel Club (AKC), the world's largest purebred dog registry.

Younger puppies being weaned off their mother's milk require around a half cup of water every two hours. Older puppies that have already been weaned tend to need between a half ounce and 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day, the AKC states.

Staying hydrated is also important for a puppy because it regulates their body temperature. In hot weather, you might see your puppy panting, which allows our canine friends to stay cool by releasing water through evaporation. However, as they are losing water through the tongue by panting, your dog may also need to drink more water than usual, the AKC's article notes.

It's important to check that your pup is drinking enough water and not experiencing dehydration. Below are some of the signs of dehydration in your dog, as outlined by Dr. Jerry Klein, the AKC's chief veterinary officer who is an expert in veterinary emergency and critical care, in a March 2024 AKC article:

  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting with or without diarrhea
  • Reduced energy levels and lethargy
  • Panting
  • Sunken, dry-looking eyes
  • Dry nose
  • Dry, sticky gums
  • Thick saliva
