Laughter at What 'Petty' Squirrel Does To Ring Doorbell Camera in Its Way

A Texas resident has left internet viewers in hysterics after sharing the unexpected moment a squirrel "drop-kicked" the Ring doorbell camera outside his home.

Reddit user u/SirRipOliver shared the hilarious footage showing the squirrel running across the porch and leaping toward the security camera at pace. The Ring camera didn't stand a chance against this ferocious critter, as it fell to the side and turned purple as a result.

The creature certainly had a point to prove, as u/SirRipOliver told Newsweek that he has been leaving food out for some opossums, and the "petty, resentful squirrels" don't seem to approve. As well as trying to steal the possum food that was left out, the squirrel had it in for the camera, too, and made its feelings very clear.

"We were actually trying to help some opossums that we captured on video, but the possum food we left out was commandeered by the squirrel instead," u/SirRipOliver said. "It is said that he did not appreciate us giving his food to a possum, and that may or may not have been why he drop-kicked my camera into the purple dimension."

The Humane Society of the United States says that squirrels are opportunistic, and they will typically feed on nuts, seeds, vegetables, and fruit. People don't need to leave food outside for them, though, as they will forage for it themselves. The Humane Society adds that having food left outside can compromise their survival skills.

However, what squirrels do require is water, so it can be beneficial to fill a clean bird bath just for them.

Like many wild animals, squirrels can harbor pathogens, including salmonella, and they can also carry rabies. However, it is important to note that there has never been any known transmission to humans.

The Online Reaction

The footage was shared on social media on August 28 on the r/AnimalsBeingDerps thread, much to the delight of Reddit users. In just a matter of days, the clip has gained more than 1,800 votes, as people can't get enough of the squirrel's cheeky antics.

The Texas resident has been delighted by the response to his video online, although he doesn't believe that was his final experience with the creature.

"Since then, said squirrel has invaded our window bird feeder: impossibly. Spider-Man would be jealous," u/SirRipOliver added.

"The squirrel definitely had it in for my camera, which may or may not have been due to our fondness to Virginia opossums. The squirrel's reaction is to eat everything, but the possum is not happy about that."

After the video went viral, many Reddit users commented on the post to laud the squirrel's outrageous behavior.

One comment reads: "Makes you camera go nuts."

Another Reddit user joked: "The look of determination."

A third commenter responded: "Seemed more like it tried to use it as something to climb/jump off than it was attacking the camera."
