Rescuer Has Message for Owner of Dog Surrendered for Being 'Too Needy'

A woman who adopted a young dog who was abandoned for being "too needy" has shared a message for the people who gave him up.

Muffin, a 10-month-old Shih Tzu, has captured hearts after his owner revealed the touching story of his adoption. Kaely Gibson, who lives in Jackson, Mississippi, rescued Muffin from a local shelter where he was abandoned by his previous owners for being "too needy," but in a viral video, she has said: "[I] wouldn't trade him for the world."

"I actually went to the shelter to meet another dog that they had posted on their website," Gibson told Newsweek, recalling the moment she met Muffin in May this year. "But, when I got there, he had just been adopted. They told me they had a new dog that had just been surrendered earlier that day and that I could meet him. And I did and immediately fell in love. I filled out the adoption papers and got to take him home a few days later."

Describing Muffin as a "very clingy puppy," Gibson said that his affectionate nature is part of what drew her to him. "He follows me around everywhere I go. And, as you saw in the video, he likes to scream when he doesn't get attention. The screaming definitely gets annoying sometimes, but I love him so much, and it makes me happy that he wants to be near me all the time and loves to cuddle."

In a video on TikTok, Gibson shared some of Muffin's antics. With more than 951,000 views, the clip showed the dog whining because his owner wouldn't let him sit on her lap while she was using the bathroom.

"The people who surrendered my dog to the shelter said he was 'too needy.' Here he is whining at me because I wouldn't let him sit in my lap while I'm on the toilet," Gibson said in the video before adding: "... no idea what they were talking about."

Commenters flooded the video with messages of encouragement and admiration. "He's not needy, he's just a Shih Tzu," wrote one user, while another posted: "Too needy?!? That's not a problem!"

Others expressed their disbelief that anyone would give up such a sweet dog. One TikTok user commented: "He wasn't too needy. They just didn't know how to love the sweet boy."

Gibson said she was surprised by the overwhelming response. "I shared the video because I thought it was cute and funny, and that people might find it funny, but I definitely did not expect it to blow up like it did," she added.

"It makes me so happy that so many people think he's so cute, and it's so nice to see that most people agree that they would never give up a dog for being needy."
