when this happened I was flabbergasted. she had never even howled. it hasn’t happened again after we got a camera to make sure she didn’t have separation anxiety. she sleeps like a baby in our bed. girl just had a song that needed to be sung that day I guess 🤣 #funnydogvideos #dogsinging #foryoupage #dogsoftiktok #talented #mars

The howling appears to cease as soon as the door is opened and two dogs are shown inside the room, with one lying on a bed. The canine on the bed looks at the camera and jumps off it before the clip ends.

Understanding Dog Vocalizations

In a May 2023 PetMD article, veterinarian Tiffany Tupler explained that dogs howl for various reasons, including to express different emotions, from excitement to anxiety and upset.

Our canine companions may use different sounds, such as howling, barking and whining, to convey various needs. For instance, howling can be a way for dogs to alert others of changes in their environment or to express loneliness.

Howling is a common form of communication among dogs that can be traced back to the most famous howling canines—wolves.

Mary Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist and the American Kennel Club's family dog director, told Newsweek previously that howling is "a form of communication for dogs that is hard-wired."

A spokesperson for VCA, the animal hospital chain, agreed, telling Newsweek in March 2022: "Like many canine behaviors, howling has ancestral roots. In the wild, safety-conscious wolves in the woods bellowed to announce their location to other members of their pack family."

Howling serves as a method for wolves to communicate over long distances, maintain pack cohesion and ward off potential threats.

Modern dogs have retained this instinct, and while not all dogs howl, those that do might be responding to specific triggers or trying to communicate their needs. For example, a siren or musical instrument can sometimes prompt a dog to howl, mimicking the sound as a form of communication.
