Bear Filmed Walking Next to Couple at Glacier National Park in Viral Video

A couple visiting the Glacier National Park of Polebridge in Montana came face-to-face with a bear that was casually walking by the edge of the road near cars making their way up the mountain.

In a viral video shared by the couple on TikTok in July, under the username @010bear010, the adult bear can be seen walking close to the couple's car, stopping near the rear to smell the peanut butter the poster was keeping in the back.

As previously reported by Newsweek, interactions with black bears are increasing in 18 states, with more than 46,000 incidents reported to state agencies in 2022 alone. The states identified in the report included Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Virginia.

While the bear didn't seem to engage with anyone in the clip, you should always operate with extreme caution when you think a bear could be nearby.

The National Park Service (NPS) explains that while seeing a bear at a national park can be exciting, it can also be dangerous because these are wild creatures and their behavior can be unpredictable.

According to the website, although rare, bear attacks on humans have occurred, sometimes inflicting serious injuries and death. However, most bear encounters end without injury, and as long as you follow some basic guidelines you can lessen the threat of danger.

"Your safety can depend on your ability to calm the bear. When you arrive in a park, always remember to check with the nearest visitor center or backcountry office for the latest bear safety information," the NPS said.

"If a bear happens to surprise you, stay calm. Do not surprise the bear if it's unaware of your presence."

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 294,800 views and 18,700 likes on the platform.

One user, Spunky, commented: "It looks like maybe a yearling black bear (some are brown). He's pretty thin, so his mom probably just kicked him out and he is still trying to figure out how to feed himself on his own. Beautiful!"

User699384713967 said: "I've been on going to the sun road probably 30 times and never seen a bear walking on the rocks by the road, that's pretty awesome."

Kris added: "Yeah, keep your window up, especially if you have food. Bears in Glacier don't have much of a fear of humans anymore. Also, good for you staying inside your vehicle!"
