Electrocuted Cat Is 'Happiest, Bravest Boy' After Sibling Helps Him Relearn
A recent Reddit post quickly went viral as viewers fell head over heels for a rescue cat who survived being electrocuted.
Four-year-old Valor captured people's hearts, thanks to his unique smile that formed following a tragic event nearly four years ago. The Reddit post shared to the subreddit channel r/cats last week shared Valor's "survivor story." When he was just 8 weeks old, Valor found a live wire left out during home renovations, bit into it and got electrocuted.
His owner, Jayma, told Newsweek that he lost part of his tongue and teeth from the accident: "That's why his little face is special."
Heartbroken by the injury, Jayma was concerned he wouldn't make it. Her mentor was looking after Valor when it happened, as Jayma was out of state for a job interview. She debated flying back, but said her mentor made the same choices she would've made. They rushed him to the vet and continued to update her on his progress.
And much to her surprise, Valor's kitty sister Athena stepped in to help him heal. Athena realized Valor was struggling. He couldn't eat or groom himself. Athena took matters into her own paws and taught him to relearn these important skills while also grooming him.
"He was food insecure and wasn't able to keep up with how hungry he was," Jayma said. "Athena taught him to pick [food] up to his mouth."
Valor and Athena created a special bond that tugged on Jayma's heartstrings. She found homes for the rest of their littermates but after seeing their relationship grow following the accident, she kept these two cats together.
"I don't know if he would've made it if he didn't have Athena," she said.
And four years later, Valor is living life like a normal cat. He can eat and drink water; however, Athena and Jayma step in from time to time to help with his grooming.
Jayma wrote in the caption that Valor is the "happiest, bravest boy."
Valor's story amassed over 38,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments as of Thursday.
"Poor Valor! I'm happy he survived and has a sister to take care of him," said a viewer, while a second added: "Aw poor kitty. I'm happy he's doing better."
Another wrote: "He's so cute tho. Love his bow tie, it suits him so much."
Other Reddit users flooded the comment section with photos of the "survivor" cats they rescued. These cats have overcome cancer, being starved and abused or getting attacked by dogs and raccoons.
