Rescue Dog Transforms From Constant Barking to Accepting Love: 'Be Patient'

A couple's patience with a scared rescue dog proved to be crucial for the canine to turn over a new leaf and feel comfortable in her forever home.

In an August 8 TikTok video posted by user @clovetherescue, an owner explained how Clove the rescue dog constantly barked in her new home. Any time someone moved, she would bark. Her partner couldn't move an inch without setting Clove off.

The dog would stand at a distance, but stayed on alert, staring and letting her voice be heard. Clove's hesitation in her new home made the couple "physically sick," and they couldn't eat because of the stress. But instead of throwing in the towel, they continued to show Clove patience and love.

Soon enough, it paid off and Clove turned a corner. She accepted the owner's partner, gladly welcoming snuggles and hugs from him. Clove even reciprocated the love by smothering him in doggy kisses.

While it was stressful for the first few days, the owner told Newsweek via TikTok that Clove let her guard down relatively quickly.

"[It took] around one-and-a-half months to settle properly and in three months her full personality came out, but after two weeks she was OK with my partner being there and stopped barking!" she said.

They discovered that Clove liked the owner's partner more when he held the dog leash. It made Clove respect him quicker, the owner said.

Owners often get frustrated with adopted animals when they first bring them home because the pets can be timid or have accidents. They are decompressing from shelter life and are uncertain about the new environment. That's why it is recommended for new pet parents to follow the so-called 3, 3, 3 rule.

This is a set of guidelines that gives owners a general idea of how long it might take for their adopted animal to adjust to their new home. In the first three days, your pet might be scared and overwhelmed by the new surroundings. They will start coming out of their shell over the next three weeks and by three months, they typically feel at home and comfortable with their new routine.

The TikTok video had amassed over 14,500 views, 722 likes and 43 comments as of Friday.

"From scared of your partner to STOLEN your partner!" commented a viewer.

Another added: "She must have been through some stuff from male humans. Thank you for being patient. Dogs are so forgiving. Makes me so emotional seeing happy endings for them."

A third person said: "Thank you. That was hard work. But you gave them a second chance at life. You're amazing."
