Owner Tests Dog's Sense of Smell, Blows Internet Away With Results
It is no secret that dogs have an incredibly powerful sense of smell, which is why one German shepherd owner decided to put it to the test. Spoiler alert: he passes with flying colors.
TikTok user Alli Serrano (@allidventures) shared footage of her dog, named Max, following his powerful scent as he tried to sniff out his other owner. Serrano told Newsweek via Instagram that his "sense of smell is wild," and Max recognized that his owner had just walked through the lobby moments before.
Eventually, after scouring multiple rooms and the elevator, the German shepherd and Australian cattle mix knew exactly where to go and found what he was looking for all along. The footage shows him marching down the corridor and running straight to his owner, who was hiding inside the apartment in Bay Area, California.
The TikTok user @allidventures wrote alongside the video that it was "amazing to see his nose in action" and put his sense of smell to the test.
Serrano said: "He was absolutely looking for his dad who had just come home and passed by the same lobby, not long before the video was taken. I thought it was hilarious that he sniffed so intensely at some point."
It took between five and 10 minutes for Max to locate his owner, and Serrano said that she was so excited to see her pet work it out all by himself.
Dogs can distinguish so much through a simple scent, all thanks to the 100 million sensory receptor sites in their nasal cavity. For comparison, humans have 6 million receptors, showing just how strong a dog's sense of smell is. VCA Animal Hospitals suggests that canines can smell anywhere between 1,000 and 10,000 times better than people.
This incredible ability allows dogs to determine which other canines have been near a tree; where a person has been before returning home; and even if they have been around any other animals, too. Beware: they can always catch you out.
However, dogs don't have to be too close to something to identify its scent, as VCA Animal Hospitals says that canines have an impeccable homing instinct. Dogs are able to move their nostrils independently, which means they can use their scent like a compass and determine which direction a smell is coming from and search for it.
Serrano loves giving Max challenges to do, as she said that she often encourages him to sniff around, and they also enjoy games of hide and seek so he can "start using his nose."
Before this, Max used to need encouragement to use his sense of smell, but now she is so proud of how far he has come because now he actively sniffs for things without prompts.
After the video was shared on July 18, it went viral and has gained over 180 comments so far.
"Social media has been mostly enthralled by his abilities," Serrano told Newsweek. "People love dogs and they love seeing their personalities, and I think it was a very fortunate timing that I caught what I did.
"The video captured Max's utter excitement knowing that his dad was home after waiting all day, and then finally getting the confirmation after finding him."
Many social-media users hailed Max's ability, while others joked about their own dog's less-than-impressive talents.
One comment reads: "That's incredible! The aggressive sniffing is so cute."
Another TikTok user wrote: "Doggo was on a mission."
"He knew it the whole time!" added a third commenter.
One comment read: "In the meantime, my dog has a hard time finding the French fry I just tossed on the floor in front of her, because it bounced over to the side."
