A dog named Appa has captured the hearts of TikTok users with his comical morning groans, likened to everything from ancient sea monsters to tired workers.

The viral video, posted on Monday by @kazandappa, features Appa's displeasure at being woken from naps, accompanied by a series of deep, rumbling sounds that TikTok users can't get enough of. According to a hashtag shared with the post, Appa is a Great Dane, a breed known for its giant size but not typically for such vocal complaints.

Since the video's release, it has garnered over two million views, with thousands of comments pouring in as viewers relate to the big dog's apparent reluctance to start the day. The video was captured in St. Augustine, a city in the northeastern part of Florida, according to a location shared with the post.

A note overlaid on the video says: "a compilation of my house cow's displeasure at waking up," setting the scene for Appa's groggy antics. The video shows Appa lying down in various positions around the house, seemingly unable to wake up without protest.

The pooch's apparent reluctance to wake up is unsurprising because our canine friends can spend as much as half their days asleep.

A study by researchers at North Carolina State University, published in December 2020 in Scientific Reports, found that most dogs have two windows of "activity peaks" during the day. One is from around 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., while another is a longer active period from about 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. All dogs were found to be more active during the weekends than weekdays, according to the study.

'Throat Singer'

Appa's moans in the viral clip are long and loud, sounding more like those of a mythological creature than a sleepy dog. His vocalizations range from low, resonating groans to short, almost human-like sighs of frustration.

The accompanying caption lists a series of comparisons that people have made about Appa's sounds: "Vhagar," a dragon from the House of the Dragon television series, "a didgeridoo [a wind instrument]," "a man who just came off an 80-hour week," and even "the Kraken," a legendary sea monster from Scandinavian folklore.

The caption also likens the groans to "something from BioShock" (a video game), "a throat singer," and "the bass in the pirate Yo Ho song" from Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean theme park attractions.

The comments section is filled with relatable jokes and empathetic remarks from viewers, many of whom see their own morning struggles reflected in the giant dog.

User maemae747 wrote: "The clip of him opening his eyes and immediately grumbling had me dead."

One user, Pottery by Danielle, commented: "Acting like he has a job to go to or something," while BrownHinata added, "Man works 12 hour shifts, let him sleep." Kevin J wrote: "Life is so hard. I feel so bad for him."

Lumprechan likened the groaning to "a Gregorian chant," while Dark noted it sounded "like a motorcycle in the second clip."

Another user, KSClaw, joked about the existential dread of waking up, commenting: "Ah yes, the ever classic, 'I am awake, but at what cost.'"

As Frill put it, "I very much understand his displeasure," while Sophia C. Gwynne added, "The same buddy. The same."
