A female dog who recently showed off her motherly instincts made it clear to the other dogs that she would be the only one to look after the owner's son.

The owner's young son was sitting on the ground near the family's two dogs in a July 26 TikTok video posted by user @molidayy29. Both dogs wagged their tails, desperate for love and affection from the tiny human, but it was the female dog who got to the son first.

She stood front and center, happily accepting head scratches when the male dog trotted in, hoping to get attention too. He slowly walked up to the female dog and son. Acting like it was her own son, the female canine made it clear no one was to come near "her puppy."

She got in between the owner's son and male dog, yelling at him to back away. The male dog was only trying to sneak in a quick kiss, but she didn't care. She wouldn't let anyone or any dog near her favorite human.

The caption reads: "She used to do the same to her baby dad."

This moment isn't an everyday occurrence. The owner told Newsweek that the two dogs are "cool now." The female dog is just "protective," which is a natural behavior for dogs.

With nearly 2 million views and 242,700 likes, viewers quickly flooded the comment section of the TikTok video with their opinions.

"She probably thinks your son is her puppy, she doesn't want other dogs around, especially a male!" said a TikTok user, while a second added: "Female dogs have stronger protective instincts."

Another wrote from the dog's perspective: "Excuse me sir, it's not your visiting schedule day."

But viewers started debating whether or not the female dog was resource-guarding in the video. An article from Preventive Vet described resource guarding as a natural behavior that occurs when a dog reacts to something they perceive as a threat to their valuable resources, such as food, toys or space.

If a dog feels they might lose something of value to them, they will take action. This could be in the form of growling, lunging, biting or fighting, but not always. A simple look or baring of the teeth could be a dog's way of guarding their valuable possessions.

This behavior, although normal, is not a desirable one, the article continued. It can be worrisome if the dog is not predictable or in a home with young children.

The owner shared in a separate video that she does not believe her dog is showing resource-guarding behaviors. Her dog won't act this way all the time. Plus, the dog allows her son to touch the other dogs. However, she will continue to keep an eye on them and ensure this behavior does not progress into aggression.
