Shelter Pleads for Someone to Rescue Huge 27-Pound Cat
A TikTok video pleading for someone to adopt an overweight 27 pound cat has gone viral, leaving social media users heartbroken and hopeful for the giant feline.
The video was posted by Kim Russell who has rescued many kittens and frequently visits the Peterborough Humane Society in Ontario, Canada, to help out. When she heard about Minnie, the overweight cat who needs adopting, she wanted to go in and meet the not-so-little kitty.
Minnie's large and round body certainly took Russell's breath away, with her telling Newsweek she's "the biggest cat [she's] ever seen."
She spent around 10 minutes with Minnie, who is thought to be around 6 years old, and in that short amount of time, she says she could already tell just how sweet and loving the cat truly is. She shared footage of the meeting on TikTok (@myjerkcats) as she pleaded with internet users to help "find this girl a home that will help in her weight loss journey."
The video showing her "substantial" size has gone viral with over 1 million views and more than 119,700 likes on TikTok in just a matter of days.
"I happened to be picking up some fosters from the Peterborough Humane Society's Spay-Neuter Clinic and stopped in to see the cats for adoption," Russell said. "I often go in and make videos of the adoptable cats to share on social media and hopefully find them homes.
"Minnie was friendly right away and is a very sweet girl. I just wanted to squeeze her immediately as I couldn't believe her size. She made some biscuits and enjoyed the attention I gave her."
Finding Minnie A Home
Minnie has been at the Peterborough Humane Society since August after a member of the community found her as a stray. Rachel Norris, the placement coordinator for the humane society told Newsweek via email that their medical team couldn't find any specific reason or condition that caused her weight gain, so they believe it was "poor diet and overfeeding."
She currently weighs 27 pounds, but an ideal weight would be around 15-17 pounds, according to Norris. While they've begun the early steps of her weight loss already, it's a very slow process, so they hope Minnie can be adopted by someone willing to help her through this journey.
"Due to her size, Minnie is unable to move as freely as a typical cat," Norris told Newsweek. "She is only able to jump up on low surfaces and wouldn't be able to run fast or far. She is unable to groom herself and does require daily grooming.
"Minnie loves to play when she's able, and as she loses weight, she'll be able to enjoy regular cat activities. But weight loss for cats is a very slow and steady process."
So far, Minnie has received some adoption interest but she's still waiting to find her forever home. The perfect home would be quiet, preferably without young children, and with an owner who is willing to give her the healthy lifestyle she deserves.
Norris continued: "An adopter can help Minnie lose weight by making sure she's as active as she can be, feeding her special metabolic diet, and working with their veterinarian to monitor her progress and make changes as needed.
"Minnie would do well in a quieter home with a family dedicated to her needs. She is on a metabolic diet and will require regular checkups with a veterinarian and requires daily grooming. She won't be able to jump high or escape from other animals or small children, so a home with either another chill senior animal, or older children would be ideal."
The humane society hopes potential adopters won't be put off by her size, as she's a very friendly cat who has a lot of love to give. Her owner must be committed to helping her shed those excess pounds, but Norris hopes they will also provide her with "lots of sunny spots to lounge around in" too.
The Social Media Reaction
After posting the video of Minnie on TikTok, Russell, who recently opened her own facility called Spicy Kitten Rescue, has been amazed by the response online. Having seen firsthand the incredible work that Peterborough Humane Society does, Russell likes to shine a lot on them and hopefully encourage more people to adopt an animal in need of a home.
While many people wished Minnie well, there was also a lot of humor and jesting in the 1,000 TikTok comments.
"We all know that this condition is not healthy for our pets, but people just love a chonky cat. There were so many funny comments, and someone nicknamed her "Minnie-Van" which is hilarious. A lot of people said I was fat shaming her but in the nicest way possible, and that they would like to be referred to as substantial from now on," Russell said.
"I hope this video will encourage people to adopt a shelter cat and help find Minnie Van the purrfect home."
Among the responses to the viral TikTok video, one comment reads: "I feel so bad for cats that are neglected like this. She looks so sweet, thank you for helping her."
Another TikToker wrote: "I need this beautiful, extra lady in my life."
While another person commented: "waddling in like a queen!"
