Basset Hound Puppy's 'Immersive Dining' Method Delights Internet

A video of a puppy's peculiar dining habits has captured the hearts of users on TikTok.

In a video posted by @beaubasset, which has amassed 1.4 million views since it was shared on September 18, a basset hound puppy called Beau is seen munching on kibble from a bowl placed in a wooden box.

Despite the bowl being at the right height, Beau prefers to lie down while eating, resulting in him placing his front paws inside the bowl as he enjoys his meal.

The caption accompanying the video reads: "Beau hasn't quite figured out eating. Don't worry, the bowl isn't too high he just prefers to lay down to eat so instead he puts his paws in it."

In a later comment, the poster clarified that "Beau is only on this food because that's what the breeder started him on. We are putting him on a new food after the first vet appt [appointment]."

Regardless of how a puppy prefers to eat, it's important for puppies to have a well-balanced diet.

Veterinarian Dr. Carling Matejka emphasized the importance of nutritional balance in puppy diets in an interview with Newsweek in May 2022. She highlighted that a puppy's diet requires a precise ratio of minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, protein, and fat for proper development.

The VCA, one of North America's largest animal hospital chains, recommends the following portion ranges for puppies on a dry food basis:

- Protein: 22 to 32 percent
- Fat: 10 to 25 percent
- Digestible carbohydrates: 20 percent
- Calcium: 0.7 to 1.7 percent

Matejka warned against nutritional deficiencies, saying, "Nutritional deficiencies can have life-long, and sometimes deathly effects, so it is best to stick to a nutritionally balanced, commercial diet."

She noted the advantages of store-purchased food, such as being self-stable, palatable, easy to prepare, and cost-effective. A complete and balanced diet means puppies won't require additional supplementation and need only consume their high-quality puppy food.

The viral video has received an outpouring of love from viewers, who couldn't help but express their adoration for Beau's charming dining style.

Comments ranged from lighthearted observations like @columnfreezer's, "It's immersive dining" and ChefKeva's, "The fully immersive dinner lol," to more affectionate remarks such as Ollie's, "he's just a baby" and Mandy McNeill's, "he's doing great."

Clara Benson aptly noted: "HE IS DOING HIS BEST," while THE_TURTLE humorously declared: "No he's doing it exactly right."

Other TikTok users, like Sarah K, appreciated Beau's thoughtful approach, saying, "I love that he was processing!" while forward_moving speculated, "he wants a bigger bowl so he can lay while he eats."

Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
