Saint Bernard Checking on 'Baby Kitties' Every Morning Delights Internet

A video of a dog that "thinks she is also a cat" and loves to help look after kittens has gone viral on TikTok.

The clip was posted by @jneldolores, a 37-year-old based in Nashville, Tennessee, who owns a small real estate business. The video has garnered over 336,000 views since it was posted on September 20.

A message overlaid on the clip read: "My Saint Bernard's morning routine when we have baby kitties."

The footage shows Dakota, a three-year-old Saint Bernard dog, walking up a flight of stairs inside a home to "go see the babies."

The dog's owner told Newsweek: "Each morning when I feed the kittens, [Dakota] pushes her way in. I usually bottle feed them and she's always right there, even at 4 a.m., as they need to be fed every three to four hours at a time."

The video shows Dakota waiting patiently outside a door before it's opened, after which she heads towards the bathroom where a carrier containing kittens is seen inside an empty bathtub. The tiny feline friends are later shown scattered around the bathtub, with Dakota sticking her head in among them.

The pup's love for the kittens is not entirely surprising, because our canine and feline companions can co-exist peacefully.

While they are often considered "mortal enemies," an increasing number of dogs and cats have been living under the same roof and "most cohabitations are peaceful," said an August 2020 study in PLOS One.

The study found that most dogs and cats that share a home sleep together "at least occasionally" and play together.

"Although some body postures, such as the tail's position, are interpreted differently by the two species, the greater proportions of dogs and cats show a relaxed response to several kinds of approaches of their roommate," the study noted.

"It is true that they speak different languages, but they seem to understand each other well and interpret each other's approaches in the right way," the study added.

'Best Foster Assistant'

A caption shared with the viral TikTok post read: "Dakota is the best foster assistant when we have baby kitties. She loves to help me feed them & babysits them too!"

The poster often looks after litters of kittens as they work with a local rescue. "We usually have the kittens for a week at a time, sometimes a little longer. Once done bottle feeding, I find a new foster to take over," they told Newsweek.

The poster said they have three of their own cats and when Dakota was brought home, "she was the size of the cats at first," the poster said, adding that "I think she thinks she is also a cat; she plays with cat toys too."

This is the sixth litter that Dakota has helped look after. "She hears them cry and she wants to be with them," the poster said.
