How a Duck Proves to Cocker Spaniel Owner Recall Training Isn't Working
A dog owner has left the internet in stitches after revealing why her dog's recall training is not working in a video that immediately went viral on social media.
The hilarious clip shared on TikTok on Friday, under the username @astrid1779, shows the cocker spaniel at a lake, swimming with the ducks while pretending she can't hear her owner calling her name.
"How is your recall training going with your spaniel," the layover text on the clip reads, and a caption says: "My gorgeous girl Skye."
Teaching your dog to come to you immediately when calling their name is the most important part of their training, but it's also the hardest, according to the American Kennel Club.
A common mistake during this type of training is recalling your dog, only to immediately put the leash on them and go home. This is because your dog may see it as an interruption of their fun, creating a negative association.
"One good method of practice is to recall, praise, and give a treat, then release your dog and allow them to return to what they were doing before," states the AKC.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 1.4 million views and 90,700 likes on the platform.
One user, Belle, commented: "My spaniel is well trained until he sees a bird, squirrel, cat, duck, human or leaf. The list is ongoing."
AmyEwayland said: "Yes! Mine is fab too. Until she saw two deer the other day, immediately deaf, and instantly thought of Fenton."
Shedendjay wrote: "I got told by a dog behaviourist to hid behind a tree and my selective hearing staffy would look for me. he didn't he went home."
User Peli_Ddraig commented: "My spaniel was one of the best behaved dogs ever. She was on point for every command & hand signal except for recall. Zero recall in any environment."
Naomi & noodles added: "My cockapoo chased a chicken down the road the other day, I was running behind her shouting her to come back, I felt like the bloke from the Fenton video."
