Belgian Malinois Adopts Litter of Tiny Foster Kittensâ'Mothering Instincts'
A dog's motherly instincts kicked in during a July 17 TikTok video as she insisted on helping a woman who took in two litters of kittens as fosters.
Wanting nothing more than to lend a helping paw, a Belgian Malinois happily steps into action whenever TikTok user @tomorrowneedsyou brings home kittens to foster. The owner recently brought home 18 cats from two separate litters plus the mother after learning they were locked in a room, she shared with Newsweek via TikTok
"They had [the mom] locked outside during the day and only inside at night," she said. "The babies were 10 days old when I took them and [the] vet said they wouldn't have lasted more than another day or two."
Helping her with the kittens, one of which was only 142 grams, was her trusty sidekick dog. In the July 17 video, the dog calmly reached into the bin of kittens and gently grabbed them one by one. She presented each kitten to her owner, making sure she knew they were there and was looking after them.
The dog knows the routine by now as it's the fourth litter she's looking after. The owner ensured viewers that her dog is never left unsupervised with the kittens. She's just an assistant who takes her job very seriously. One "baby" she looked after is now 6 months old and the dog still carries it around and watches it. Once she becomes a mama, she never stops.
The owner shared that the older kitten litter of six has been rehomed. They, unfortunately, lost one from the second litter of five. She said the "remaining four are perfect." She had been syringe-feeding the second litter.
"I was going to rehome them, but we are moving to over 12 acres so we are keeping them," she said. "I got mom spayed already."
Viewers fell in love with the dog's sweet actions, bringing in more than 767,200 views, 137,000 likes and 613 comments on TikTok as of Monday.
"I feel like it's caused her mothering instincts to go off but she's still confused on how to be a mom," said a viewer.
A second added: "You can tell she is trying to be SOOOO gentle."
Others commented from the dog's perspective: "She's like, 'Don't let them nap! They won't sleep at night!'"
Another asked: "But did you see this one? What about this one?"
