Rescue Greyhound Wags Tail in His Sleep Now He's 'Living His Best Life'

A rescued greyhound has made his feelings about his new home crystal clear, even while asleep.

In a heartwarming video, Udon the dog was captured wagging his tail while he slept. Francesca Ziccardi, from Bedfordshire in the U.K., shared the adorable footage of her seven-year-old, ex-racing dog in a video that quickly gained viral attention.

Udon was adopted in April 2024, and was caught on camera taking a snooze after taking part in the Global Greyhound Walk, an annual event in which greyhounds worldwide meet up for a group stroll. As he dozed off, his tail started wagging in what his owner believes was a sign of pure joy and contentment.

Greyhounds are often bred for racing, despite the fact commercial dog racing is now illegal in 42 states. The average racing career of a greyhound in the U.S. typically spans 1.5 to 3.5 years, and most of the animals reach their "peak performance" when they are about two.

In the U.K., where Udon lives and was adopted, greyhound racing remains legal, but there has been a significant decline in interest in recent years. In the U.K. alone, around 6,000 greyhounds leave the licensed industry each year, creating a need for charities and rescue organizations to find them new homes.

Now out of the racing industry, Udon is clearly living his best life, kicking back on the couch and dreaming away.

"He wags his tail in his sleep I think because he's dreaming," Ziccardi told Newsweek. "He often does it after a big walk or a fun day out. This time, it was after the Global Greyhound Walk, which was such a wonderful experience. I love sharing these moments because animal content brings so much joy—it's impossible not to smile."

Ziccardi shares Udon and his pet friends on Instagram and TikTok under the handle @fransfloofs, frequently posting wholesome pet content.

"Don't mind us, just my rescue greyhound wagging his tail in his sleep, as he is now living his best life off the race track as he deserves," the owner said in the video of the funny sleeping moment on TikTok.

People were delighted by Udon's adorable, happy sleep and rushed to share their reactions in the comments. "Legs up, tail up and wagging, teeth out, he's totally loving life," said @powellina73. While viewer @bookaholic.gracie, shared their own experience with greyhound adoption and said: "I had an ex-racer! They have the purest hearts."

Ziccardi was delighted by the reaction to the video online, explaining that she has built a strong community from sharing her pets on the internet: "I've met so many amazing people through Instagram who share my love for animals. My best friend, who's from Wales, and I actually met through social media, and now she's even coming to my wedding!"
