Cat Wearing Life Jacket Greets Kayakers in Heartwarming Video: 'I'd Melt'
Most cats are usually afraid of water, but not Freyja, a Siberian from Vancouver, Canada, who recently went viral on social media after going on not one, but two kayaking adventures with her owner.
In a video shared on TikTok earlier in June, under the username freyja_siberian, the feline can be seen graciously sitting on a kayak with her owner, while wearing a cat-sized life jacket, greeting other kayakers who crossed her path.
A caption shared with the post reads: "My cat saying hi to strangers during her 2nd kayaking adventure!" This was followed by: "Saying hi to kayakers! We are still practicing how to kayak together but so far so good!"
While Freyja didn't seem to be bothered by the water in the slightest, most cats usually are, even if it's just a little bit. But why are they so afraid of it?
The feline resource website Catster states that there are five possible reasons behind this irrational fear. Cats evolved in dry climates where they didn't have any lakes or large sources of water available, so they don't naturally know how to deal with it.
Being wet also makes them feel heavy and uncomfortable, especially after spending hours grooming their fur to keep it clean and tidy.
Another reason is that they've previously had a bad experience with water and are afraid it could repeat. They also have a good sense of smell that allows them to detect chemicals, especially in tap or pool water.
Finally, cats love being in control, and when they're in the water, they feel like they have no control over what's happening.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 1.2 million views and 166,800 likes on the platform.
One user, Nico Nico, commented: "That was not the appropriate amount of excitement when one sees a cat in sunglasses on a canoe. come on now!"
Fliinks said: "The natural cat owners response to their cats 'meow' is either another meow from us or we try and make a lil noise to talk to them."
Valyryn added: "I have that same canoe/kayak that the couple are using! I love it! I just need a cat kayak buddy!"
