Exhausted Sheepdog Caught Sleeping on the Job: 'She's Earned It'
A video has gone viral showing the adorable moment a farm owner found her herding dog fast asleep on the job after a busy day of rounding up the sheep.
Following a hectic day at work, sometimes the only thing you can think about is lying down and falling asleep. Indeed, that's exactly what this kelpie, named Pippy, did after a long day, as she found a quiet spot to rest her head and have a well-earned snooze.
Her owner, Kati Warren, originally from England but now living in South Australia, told Newsweek that Pippy had been "working very hard" all day on the farm, as she does every day. It's a tough life though and every now and then she just needs to close her eyes and fit in a quick power nap.
Warren couldn't resist capturing the precious moment she found Pippy curled up and sleeping in the back of a trailer and shared it on TikTok (@katiwarren7). Social media users were delighted by the sweet video, leading to more than 588,000 views and over 91,500 likes in just a few days.
"At the time, it was just part of a regular day for us. I was actually cleaning a trough at the time and turned around and noticed her sleeping like that," Warren said. "Most of the day she had been herding sheep, as she always does.
"I didn't expect the video to get such a huge response, but it is so nice to see all the comments. People think she's just so cute."
The working kelpie is a medium-sized, active, muscular, and highly energetic breed that can do long hours of work without tiring. The American Kennel Club (AKC) highlights their keen devotion to work and natural instinct for herding livestock which was inherited from their ancestors and maintained through to today.
Their talents don't just lie in herding sheep however, as the AKC suggests that they can also successfully manage reindeer, goats, and cattle. Due to their incredible intellect, they are also used as search and rescue dogs in some countries.
When they aren't working tirelessly, kelpies also love companionship, and they can even make wonderful family pets. They have very gentle and peaceful natures, so they will happily get along with children in the family, but they may regard them as their own younglings to be protected and cared for.
The Social Media Reaction
After going viral, the video has amassed over 170 comments on TikTok as internet users lauded the exhausted pup for taking some time for herself. Warren even agreed that these moments are much needed, as she joked in the TikTok caption that "naptime is a very important part of the day."
Among the hundreds of comments, one TikToker wrote: "Kelpie back in its charging dock."
Another person responded: "That's one content kelpie."
"That looked like one of those naps you wake up from and you don't know where you are for a sec lol," added another.
While one comment reads: "As someone who's been around [kelpies] their whole life, I'm so glad you got video evidence of one sleeping! Must have been a big day. She's earned it."
