Adopted Stray Cat Who Loves Leash Walks Wins Pet of the Week
From a dog's hilarious reaction to the furniture being rearranged to a pet that dug a hole to hang out with a friend, there have been plenty of heartwarming and hilarious pet stories this week.
Newsweek has also been receiving pictures and videos from our readers of their pets. If you want your pet to be in our line-up next week, learn how to get involved at the end of this story.
Winner
This week's Pet of the Week winner is Noah, an orange tabby, who unlike most cats, loves to walk on a leash.
Adopted in 2019 by owner Kathleen Kastner, Noah was found as a stray after spending five years outside, hunting and breeding.
Kastner wanted to keep him safe from outdoor dangers like cars and coyotes, so she planned to make him an indoor cat. However, Noah had other ideas. One night, he pushed through a bedroom window screen and ran off.
"I thought I would never see him again," Kastner told Newsweek. But thankfully, Noah returned 15 minutes later and curled up in bed.
Realizing Noah's need for outdoor time, Kastner and her husband found a compromise. Her husband built a "catio" and they started leash walking Noah so he could explore the outdoors. "He took to it right away," Kastner said.
Now, Noah enjoys two to three daily walks and has become a local star, known as "the coolest cat on the block." He even shows affection by placing his back paws on new friends' feet. After five years, Noah has happily embraced indoor life thanks to his new safe outdoor adventures.
Finalists
Our first finalist this week is Honey, a Chow Chow and Golden retriever mix, who enjoyed a special post-vet treat.
Mary Pettigrew shared with Newsweek how her beloved pet was in need of an extra special treat.
"Honey was recovering from a surgery that removed a fist size cancerous tumor from her left upper leg," Pettigrew said.
Honey is doing much better now. On the way home from the vet's office, her owners were keen to celebrate her being a good patient and treated their beloved pup to a snack of Chick-fil-A's grilled chicken nuggets.
Next up this week is two senior dogs named Lollipop and Taffy who were adopted by owner Betty Follansbee from a local Stockton, California, animal shelter.
"When I turned 80 I went to the animal shelter to adopt an old dog," Follansbee told Newsweek. Lollipop, a 10+ year-old pup, was diagnosed with cancer on her spleen and mammary gland after being spayed, but Follansbee refused to give up on her, bringing her home to live with her.
Follansbee wouldn't give up on Lollipop, and after surgery, chemotherapy treatment, and a lot of love, Lollipop is now cancer-free.
When the shelter called to say Lollipop's street partner, Taffy, was going to be put down, Follansbee stepped in again, rescuing the Great Pyrenees as well. Almost a year later, both dogs are living happily, running around.
"Never give up and it ain't over till it's over," Follansbee said. "Both dogs have lived a very happy life for almost a year now."
Last but not least is rescue dog Luna Lou who lives with owner Deborah Flores.
Rescued from Oakland Animal Services (OAS) in Oakland, California, Luna Lou is now living her best life with her owner, who is passionate about animal rescue.
"My entire family has animals from these good folks at OAS," Flores told Newsweek. "We support adoption and wouldn't dream of shopping. Your life and their lives are changed forever."
