Labrador Pulls Dog Walker Into Nettle Bush, Owners Discover Her Revenge
A video about a dog appearing embarrassed after a bit of mischief during a walk outdoors has gone viral on TikTok.
The video was posted @murphythefoxredlab, the TikTok account of a red fox Labrador retriever called Murphy. The clip has garnered over 250,000 views since it was shared on June 19.
The video begins with a close-up of Murphy looking innocently at the camera. A message overlaid on the screen sets the scene: "POV [point of view] you receive this text from your dog walker." The text refers to a message sent by Courtney, Murphy's dog walker, describing an unexpected mishap during their walk.
"Murphy pulled me into a nettle bush so I am not only sharing the unserious pictures, I hope he is embarrassed," Courtney texted. The video then shows a picture of Murphy standing on a patch of grass, seemingly unfazed by the day's events.
Nettle bushes are notorious for their stinging hairs, which can cause a painful rash and irritation upon contact with skin. These hairs inject histamines and other chemicals that produce a stinging sensation, redness, and swelling. While not typically dangerous, the discomfort can last for several hours, making a fall into a nettle bush quite an unpleasant experience.
In a playful twist, the video cuts to Murphy sitting next to a bouquet of yellow roses with a note that reads, "I'm sorry Courtney." A message overlaid on the video reads: "We're sorry and we love you."
As apologetic as the dog may have seemed, can dogs feel guilt?
"Your pet's body posture and attitude do not indicate guilt or remorse but represent a response to your body posture and attitude," explained veterinarians Ellen Lindell and Lynn Buzhardt and licensed veterinary technician Monique Feyrecilde in an article for VCA, the animal hospital chain.
"Research suggests that dogs with a guilty look do not show evidence that they are aware of having engaged in misbehavior. One would not experience guilt if one were unaware that a crime had been committed," they said.
"Guilty looks signify the pet's fear, concern or anxiety in response to a potential confrontation," they noted.
'Embarrassing'
A caption accompanying the post acknowledges Murphy's antics: "Somebody's been a naughty boy, we're lucky to have the best dog walker in Leicester!"
TikTok users adored the dog's reaction in the viral clip.
"The photos aren't embarrassing they are just so cute," said @stitch628!
"As a dog walker this has made me laugh so much," @carlie.pawprints commented.
"He probably regrets nothing and will 100 percent do it again," TikTok user Megan Doyle wrote. The original poster replied: "he'd have forgotten about it ten seconds later...."
"This is so sweet. It's not your fault or his and I love that she didn't get mad but it's sweet you apologized anyway," TikToker Reanna said.
Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
