Lawn Workers' Gesture on Cat's Grave Melts Heart: 'Paying His Respects'
A poster on Reddit was left pleasantly surprised by their lawn workers' "incredibly sweet and thoughtful" gesture towards their deceased cat.
The incident was shared by user coltd89 and has resonated with thousands, receiving 18,000 upvotes since it was posted on October 12, with numerous comments from other Redditors who were moved by the lawn workers' respectful act.
The poster shared an image of their cat's grave with the caption: "Our lawn care guys edged our cat's grave."
In the image, the grave of the user's beloved cat is shown with a neatly carved rectangular outline at the base of the gravestone. This neat and precise edging indicated that the lawn care workers had taken the time and effort to pay their respects and maintain the area around the grave.
According to an April 2021 study published in Death Studies: "Animal owners who experience the death of a beloved family pet or companion animal may experience feelings of grief and loss that are synonymous with the death of a human."
Bereaved pet owners "frequently reported feelings of embarrassment and loneliness following the loss of their pet," noted a June 2021 study in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science.
The June 2021 study found that pet owners in bereavement are "likely to experience disenfranchisement surrounding their loss."
The June 2021 study also highlighted various coping mechanisms that pet owners adopt, including "isolation, social support, continuing bonds, memorialization, religion, and relationships with other animals."
'Incredibly Sweet and Thoughtful'
The comments section of the post was filled with heartfelt responses from other Reddit users, echoing the warmth and respect that the lawn workers had shown.
User moutonbleu commented: "Paying his respects, that's sweet of him," and Mythnam agreed, saying: "I find this very sweet."
Another commenter, Christopurrrrr, expressed mixed emotions, saying: "I can't tell if I would be happy, confused, grateful or weirded out. This is one of those things that make you go 'huh... well then.'" The original poster replied: "You captured my thoughts well."
User russbus280 added: "Looks like something that would have been done with good intentions. Personally, would feel grateful, even if I didn't care much for how it looks." The original poster responded "It was really thoughtful of them and the whole family appreciates it. It just stood out because they've never done it in the past."
User whatdoblindpeoplesee suggested: "I think it is incredibly sweet and thoughtful of them even if it could have been executed a little better. At the very least they've outlined an area for a small flowerbed or tree/lilac bush."
Anon419420 simply stated: "That's pretty nice of them. Seems like they just wanted to respect it and clean it up."
Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via the Reddit messaging system.
