Water Puddle Leads Owner To Suspect Puppy, but the Internet Stands by Him

A video has gone viral showing a golden retriever puppy hiding from his owner after causing mischief, but the internet has insisted that he's innocent.

TikTok user Madeline Mahorney (@maddiemahorney) shared the hilarious video online showing the moment she spotted a puddle of water that had been splashed on the floor right next to her dog's water bowl—but she couldn't know for sure who was at fault.

The clip also showed her sweet golden retriever puppy hiding behind the coffee table, but social media users were quick to suggest that wasn't an admission of guilt by any means. There's really no telling who the culprit was, and the puppy remains innocent until proven guilty.

Since the adorable video was posted on TikTok on October 1, it has gone viral with more than 632,300 views and over 78,400 likes at the time of writing. Newsweek has contacted @maddiemahorney via TikTok for comment.

It may have been the dog's water that was spilled on the floor, but for now, the mystery of the unexplained puddle remains unsolved, and the dog hasn't taken any blame (yet).

Plenty of dog owners have had the misfortune of discovering that their four-legged friend has made a mess inside the house or chewed something they shouldn't have. And while they might look full of guilt, the American Kennel Club (AKC) explains that we don't know for sure whether dogs can actually feel guilt.

Typically, when a dog tucks their tail in, starts cowering, yawning, flattens their ears, or avoids eye contact, these are signs of fear or stress. Even if a dog exhibits these signals after doing something wrong, it doesn't necessarily mean they feel guilty because that's a very complex emotion. The AKC says that guilt requires an understanding of cause and effect relative to time, and since dogs can only bark and whine, there's no way of proving they know this.

How Did TikTok React?

After the dog's antics went viral, plenty of social media users rushed to his defense, leading to more than 560 comments on the post. Plenty of TikTok users offered their theories for what might have happened, since it definitely couldn't have been the dog.

One TikTok user wrote: "one thing I can guarantee is that it wasn't the distinguished gentleman behind the table."

Another person joked: "You can ask the puppy, maybe the puppy saw who did it."

"Did you find out who did it and scared that sweet angel baby? Two crimes were committed here," one TikToker responded.

While another person added: "Clearly an intruder, it's just too perfect, he was framed."
