Senior Shelter Dog Gets Adopted, Discovers 'Life Is Magical'
A dog called Ziggy is living his best life with a new family after being surrendered by his previous owner to a Texas shelter last year.
In a viral video shared on TikTok in May by @ziggythemann, Ziggy's new owner, Isabelle, explained that a year ago the pup was just one of the many senior dogs abandoned in a shelter without a family—but now he gets to live every dog's dream life.
A caption shared alongside the clip read: "A year ago he was a senior dog in a shelter.. but now... life is magical."
Isabelle told Newsweek that after being surrendered in March 2023, Ziggy was sent to Waggytail Rescue in New York and lived with a foster family until she adopted him.
"I adopted him exactly one year ago today," she said, "Since the day he was surrendered, he has made huge strides. His missing fur on his tail and ears grew back. He had 22 painful dead teeth removed. His joints feel much better and he can take much further walks.
"Ziggy is curious, silly and sweet. He likes to cuddle, go on walks and chase squirrels. He is good with kids and most other dogs. He spends most his time napping. He will do almost anything for a treat!"
Each year 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet 'Shelter Watch Report' found.
According to the Humane Society of Macomb, the most common reasons for dog surrenders include age, allergies, behavioral issues, clean-up, cost, moving, new pets, and shedding.
Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 68,400 views and 12,000 views on the platform.
One user, Liveitlively128, commented: "That's just the cutest thing!! You're the best ever to that pups."
Jess said: "Not to be dramatic but this is the cutest lil baby I've ever seen."
Ness added: "Senior where?!?! That cute pie be looking like a teen with all that love and good life, love this for him! Deserves all the lovies and smooches."
