Tears at How 17-Year-Old Dog Waits Every Day by the Door for 'His Person'

The heartwarming way one senior dog waits patiently for his owner's return has melted hearts online.

In a viral video with more than 230,000 views, TikTok user @ellogovner6969 shared the touching ritual that has become her 17-year-old dachshund Cody's nightly routine.

In the footage, the small senior dog is seen sitting by the front door, his bed nearby, but steadfast in his duty to wait for his "person" to arrive home safely.

The text overlay on the video read: "POV: My dachshund, Cody, has done this for 17 years. He sits and waits by the door for my dad because that's his person. Cody can't sleep without knowing my dad made it back home safe, so no matter what time, he will stay up waiting for his dad."

In a follow-up comment, Cody's owner explained that they moved his bed to the front door "because he will sleep on the rug waiting for my dad, and we didn't want anyone tripping on him." The video's caption added: "Brb crying" as Cody's silhouette cast against the wall near the door.

Online, people couldn't get enough of the pup's show of loyalty and shared their reactions and similar stories.

User xchristynuhx commented: "He's like, 'He should be walking through that door any minute now,' UGH IM CRYING." Another user, bunnybunbbb, wrote: "Crying. This is so precious."

Viewer thenames_gabbs was equally delighted by the dog's vigil: "Sweet boy. That's true love."

While fellow pet owner Kachow said that their dog often does something similar: "My chihuahua always knows what time my dad gets home and does the same."

Cody's routine highlights the loyalty dogs often show their owners, and is far from the first story of a dog waiting patiently for their "person."

Last year, a dog gained attention for heartbreakingly waiting for a year outside the hospital where his owner died. Another dog was found guarding the body of his owner after almost 10 years with him.

Other pets have been known to show their loyalty to more than just their owners, like the dachshund who adorably stood guard while her favorite toy donkey took a spin in the laundry.
