Dog Keeps Watchful Eye As Man Stays At Female Owner's Home: 'Uncomfortable'
A dog called Leia from Quebec, Canada, has left the internet in stitches after her reaction to having a man in the house went viral on social media.
In the viral clip, shared on TikTok on Sunday by her owner under the username evaalexocomedy, the 3-yea-old Dalmatian can be seen staring at her owner's friend James who was staying at their place, keeping her eyes on him until he leaves.
A caption shared with the clip explains: "Story time: Leia and I stayed at the spare humans house while i let my friend stay at my place who was in town for a show.
"She's never met him before and when we got home he wasn't here. This was her reaction when he came to get his suitcase."
The poster, Evangelia, from Montreal, told Newsweek that she adopted Leia during the covid-19 pandemic when she was going through a depressive episode.
"A Dalmatian had always been my dream dog and while scrolling on Facebook one day a friend tagged me on a post where a woman said she had the perfect puppy returned to her. Obviously, you think 'everyone says that,' but I took a chance and applied.
"They chose me and I drove 4 hours to Toronto to meet her and it was instant. She's been by my side ever since. In this case, the lady was right, she really just is a good girl. She barely barks, loves to sleep 12 hours a day, hangs out with the girls, and [she] basically comes everywhere with me."
According to the poster, her fear of men is the same fear most women have of men.
"Honestly, I wish I had a concrete answer but she's a just girls' girl who knows her worth and [it] takes a while to win her trust unless you're a woman or a child (loves them). It took my boyfriend 6 months of treats to win her over and he is possibly the greenest of green flags."
While Dalmatians' coats are famously white with black spots, it is not uncommon to see coats with brown spots too, according to the American Kennel Club.
"Reserved and dignified, Dals can be aloof with strangers and are dependable watchdogs. With their preferred humans, Dals are bright, loyal, and loving house dogs," states the AKC, adding that they are strong and active athletes who can make great partners for runners and hikers.
Each year 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet 'Shelter Watch Report' found.
Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 3.8 million views and 993,300 likes on the platform.
One user, Nina 🇮🇶, commented: "Can you tell her that I would kill for her, literally love her."
Bree Breezy said: "Why would a man be there?!' ahhh dog. I love that for her."
Candacce added: "Ok he's your friend james... but what is he doing HERE?"
Another user, Molly Poppins said: "The fact she's not barking or growling, just staring in horror makes it 10x funnier." And the poster answered: "LMAO litterally! Just so uncomfortable."
