'Split Second' Moment Deaf Dog Realizes Owner Is Home Caught On Camera
In a touching display that has captured the hearts of thousands online, Astrid, a 2.5-year-old deaf Australian Shepherd, didn't let her disability hinder her excitement upon her owner's return.
A video shared on Reddit last Thursday under the username u/rakosten shows the heartwarming moment when Astrid realizes her owner has come home, swiftly turning a routine day into an extraordinary reunion.
The viral clip captures the pup initially using her keen sense of smell to investigate the air, tail wagging slowly as she picks up her owner's familiar scent.
The transformation in her excitement is remarkable—once she visually confirms his presence, the gentle wag turns into exuberant tailspins.
The post, aptly captioned "The split second when our deaf dog realizes that I am home again," has since gone viral, drawing comments from users who playfully imagined they could hear a "cartoon take-off and running sound" as she sprinted toward him.
Her owner told Newsweek that Astrid, who was born completely deaf in both ears, has a "big heart filled with emotions," and for her, it's always "all or nothing."
"Half measures doesn't exist in her world and she always gives 110 %. It doesn't matter if it's about greeting a family member or taking a walk," he said, adding "We couldn't ask for a more loveable and affectionate family member. To us she's perfect just the way she is," he added.
Named after the beloved Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, this spirited pup has been a part of their family since she was 10 weeks old. Her owner adds, "She greets me this way every time I come home. It's kind of her trademark by now."
Astrid's enthusiasm isn't just limited to greetings. She adores long road trips and is an ideal travel companion. Her family recounts a memorable journey from Sweden through Denmark, Germany, Austria, and Italy.
"She can sleep for hours in the back of the car," her owner recalls. "Last year, if we hadn't woken her up for walks and meals, she would have slept right through Germany. She's a dream companion for the road."
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across Reddit. It has so far received over 15,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Oiggamed, commented: "I heard that cartoon take off and running sound."
Remarkable_Ad_2411 said: "You can tell that your dog really loves you and you obviously care about it and I'm happy for you guys."
Citrus_mystic added: "I love the full body rocket launch straight into you— ready or not, here she comes!"
This affectionate behavior is not unusual for dogs, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Signs of a dog's love can be as overt as an ecstatic greeting or as subtle as following their owner around the house. Whether it's bringing "presents" or sharing a bed, these gestures signify a deep bond.
For Astrid, every reunion is a grand celebration. Her story is a powerful reminder of the deep connections that can form between humans and their pets, transcending even the absence of sound. Her joyful greetings continue to resonate, symbolizing that love, indeed, needs no words.
