Dogs Unsure How To Act Around New Puppy Melt Hearts: 'He's in Good Hands'

A pair of rescue dogs from Connecticut had no idea how to act when they first met the newest addition to their family, a puppy named Millie. But after a few sniffs, things changed, and internet users can't cope with what they did next.

In a viral TikTok video shared earlier in November by the puppy's owner, Melissa Kiddie, under the username @mmillicent333, the two dogs Maddy and Cooper, can be seen looking at Millie confused, as if they had never seen a puppy before.

But then, after giving her a few good sniffs, they immediately decided that they loved her, and started teaching her all sorts of new games.

Kiddie told Newsweek that Millie (short for Millicent), is a mix between Bernese mountain dog and golden retriever with the "gentle retriever body," Bernese colors, and a loving personality to match.

"Millie loves outdoor adventures—hiking upstate, swimming in lakes, rivers, or the ocean, playing at the dog park, and people-watching from New York benches," she said, adding that she also gets to spend her weekends in the suburbs.

The other two pups in the clip, Maddy and Cooper, are best friends who spend their days running in their big backyard in Connecticut with the poster's parents.

Maddy is an 8-year-old Border collie mix who was rescued by the poster's parents from South Carolina, while Cooper is a 5-year-old flat-coated retriever mix, rescued from Puerto Rico through Safe & Sound Satos.

"We were really excited to bring Millie to our parents' house to meet Maddy and Cooper. We were a little nervous because we weren't sure how they would get along. Millie was so small, and had just flown across the country from Colorado to her new home in New York City.

"Maddy and Cooper had likely never met a puppy so young and so small. All our nerves were calmed quickly when Maddy and Cooper were nothing but curious, loving and just as excited as us (as noted in Maddy's happy stomps and Cooper's gentle sniffs)."

Introducing a puppy to one or more established dogs is a process that takes time and patience, but it's totally worth seeing their wholesome relationship grow.

Kiddie said that she introduced the puppy to her parents' older dogs using the "scent swapping" method, which many experts say is actually the best way to introduce canines.

The first thing to do is to grab an item, like a blanket, that smells like the puppy, and allow the dogs to familiarize themselves to the scent. Then it's time for the first introduction, which is better done outside in a neutral area, like Kiddie did in the patio before filming the clip.

Once they're all comfortable with each other, you can bring your new puppy home, ensuring that each dog has their own bowls, toys, blankets and a private space where to isolated when needed, to avoid conflicts.

Their interactions should be monitored until the pups are relaxed around each other, even if it means crating the puppy when you're out.

The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 49,500 views and 3,613 likes on the platform.

One user, Care, commented: "Love right at first at sight."

Countinmybilliams added: "He's in good hands."
