No One Can Believe Dog Who Plays Connect 4 With Owner: 'Let Him Win'

A mixed breed rescue dog has wowed the internet with his unexpected board game skills.

In a video with more than 1.9 million views on TikTok, Darrel the dog was caught on camera playing a game of Connect 4 with owner Hailey Adair in their Washington home.

Adair adopted Darrel several years ago, but it wasn't until they were stuck home during the COVID-19 pandemic that she started teaching him some amazing tricks.

"We began learning tricks a few years ago after we were sent home from the office due to the pandemic," Adair told Newsweek. "Training became not only a source of mental stimulation but also a great way to build our bond. Darrel and I play games together as a fun way to connect, play, and escape from the world. We learn unique tricks all the time."

Since then, Darrel has learned over 100 tricks, and enjoys skateboarding, hockey and basketball. Connect 4 has become a favorite because, as Adair explained, "it encourages focus, and he seems to enjoy playing with me."

The video gained lots of attention from viewers on TikTok who shared reactions in the comments.

"You better let him win," joked one commenter, while TikTok user @idfkraspberry said: "this is the cutest thing I've ever seen."

Another user, @essentialhenna, wrote: "Wow, I'm impressed. hope he wins all the games you play with him."

Many were amazed by Darrel's skill. A different TikTok user said: "If someone told me they played connect 4 with their dog, I'd never believe it unless I saw it."

Of course, many owners believe their dog is smart, but some dogs blow others out of the water. Like cocker spaniel Leo who holds a Guinness World Record for putting 23 coins in a piggy bank in one minute—smashing the previous record of 18 coins.

Some owners end up teaching their dogs new tricks by accident, like the woman who taught her dog Bella how to create a "trade negotiation" situation by swapping a shoe for a treat.

With the outpouring of positive responses, Adair is considering doing a live session where Darrel can play Connect 4 in real-time for fans.

"I was overwhelmed by the kind and sweet messages from folks online," she said. "I particularly love this video because it shows he understands without me even having to say anything."
