Hysterics Over Cat's Zero Survival Instincts: 'Testing His Nine Lives'

A viral video of a cat sitting on a stovetop completely unbothered has left social media viewers laughing.

The owner, known on TikTok as @itssydneychloe, rushed to the kitchen after hearing the stove beeping again and again. Confusion set in because she wasn't cooking and the lights were off. So what could be making the stove go off? That became apparent once she switched on the lights.

In the November 12 TikTok video, the owner found her black cat sitting inside a pan placed on one of the stove's burners. He was unbothered by the beeping, seemingly unaware that it was a signal to get off. As the owner wrote in the caption, he had "zero self preservation instincts."

The cat locked eyes with her, trying to communicate there was nothing wrong and nothing to see. He had it all under control. And, surprisingly, he did. The stove read that there was an error, which meant he didn't accidentally turn it on. He was safe from burning himself, at least this time.

The TikTok clip quickly amassed over 32.9 million views, 4.3 million likes and 18,600 comments as of Monday. People couldn't stop laughing but also said they expected nothing less from cats.

"I swear cats exist just to stress us out," joked one viewer, while a second wrote: "This was not on tonight's menu..."

Another added: "Cat is testing his 9 lives."

Someone else commented: "I'm sure there are easier ways to drop hints that you want a heated bed for Christmas."

Keeping Cats Off Stoves

A cat's curiosity often leads to counter-surfing as they try to get a new vantage point or sneak food. This behavior can be frustrating and a cause for safety concerns. To stop cats from climbing the counters, and more importantly the stovetop, WikiHow recommends trying both positive and negative reinforcement to see what will work best for your cat.

Add cat trees or other cat-friendly places to climb, like a bookshelf, around the house. This will help distract them and they might not be drawn to the stove as much. Reward them for using a different area. Cats might resort to counter-surfing because of boredom, which means it's important to carve out time each day to spend time and play with your cat.

Negative reinforcement tricks include discouraging the cat from this behavior. To do this, try placing sticky mats on the countertop or objects on the edge of the counter that block their way up. Cover the stove with aluminum foil or bubble wrap. Cats hate the feeling and might learn not to jump up anymore.

Also, use pet-friendly citrus cleaners. Or spray the cat with compressed air to deter it.
