Pet Cam Captures Puppy's Heartbreaking Reaction to Being Left Alone

A dog owner has shared footage of a puppy's reaction to being left alone "for a short time."

TikTok user @iswaul posted a video of the small dog howling in the direction of what appeared to be a door. The pup later padded around the apartment, past an open crate and plush toys scattered around the room, while continuing to howl intermittently.

According to the user's earlier posts, the pup's name is Alva, and she is a relatively new addition to the household. Newsweek has contacted @iswaul for comment.

Alva, the video suggested, was let alone only momentarily. "Me thinking my puppy would be fine alone for a short time," the owner wrote along with a clown and crying face emoji.

While the video offered no indication of how long Alva was left on her own, it's clear her owner regretted the decision, and the poster isn't the first to feel that way about leaving their four-legged friend at home.

Separation anxiety appears to be a source of some considerable concern among animal lovers.

In 2023, a survey of 2,000 pet owners—conducted by OnePoll on behalf of PetMeds—found that 44 percent of respondents expressed worries about their pets experiencing separation anxiety when left at home alone.

The survey found that 66 percent of employed respondents reported that their pets reacted strongly when they left for work. Meanwhile, 48 percent said their pets often followed them to the door and looked sad; 33 percent said their pets whined; and 22 percent said they seemed anxious and paced around.

Some pet owners go to great lengths to ensure their furry friends feel a little less lonely. According to the survey, 41 percent of owners arranged for a friend or family member to check in on their pets, and much like the owner behind the TikTok video, 31 percent of those polled used pet cameras to keep an eye on their pets' activities.

Alva isn't the first dog to leave their owner feeling guilty. In June, an American Bully had viewers welling up after being caught on camera seemingly pleading for "mommy and daddy" to come home.

Another video, posted in August, ruined a TikToker's day. While checking in on her 9-year-old boxer, she found him looking dejected as he waited alone for her return. In September, a video showed one dog's "howls of sadness" as it waited for its owner's return.
