Hysterics as 'Escape Artist' Dog Ruins Owners' Engagement by Running Away

Everyone knows that proposals are supposed to be about the happy couple, but one rescue dog couldn't control her urge to be the main character, so she slipped her leash and ran off during the celebration instead.

Dog owners Anne Marie Schlegel, 26, and her fiancé, Kody, 29, were celebrating their engagement in front of friends and family, and of course, their rescue dog, Ollie. As Schlegel popped open a bottle of champagne and sprayed bubbles everywhere, Ollie decided she'd had enough of her humans stealing the limelight and sneakily slipped out of her collar.

It only took a few moments for Kody, who was holding the leash, to realize there was no longer a dog on the other end of it. Thankfully, Schlegel told Newsweek that Ollie, a black Labrador mix, "didn't actually run away" and she only got as far as a patch of grass nearby.

Prior to the video, the couple didn't realize that her collar was loose, so as she moved her head to look around, it just slipped straight off.

"Kody knew that Ollie had to be part of the proposal in some way," Schlegel, from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, said. "So, he surprised me with her wearing a bandana that said, 'Will you marry my dad?' and we decided to get a video of us popping champagne with her next to us.

"As she's a dog and didn't realize that we'd just got engaged, I don't think she cared to stay right beside us while we celebrated. I think she just turned her head to see what was going on and happened to slip out of the collar while we were distracted," she continued.

Schlegel shared footage of Ollie's hilarious antics on TikTok (@annieschlegel) and it left internet users in hysterics. In just a matter of days, the clip has amassed over 2.5 million views and 295,300 likes as TikTokers can't get enough of the mischievous pup.

Some people were concerned about Ollie's safety and suggested that she might have been scared of the champagne cork popping. But Schlegel insists she isn't reactive and was completely safe the whole time.

"I thought the video was absolutely hilarious," Schlegel said. "It had me in tears because I thought it was so funny. It's even funnier that my fiancé was unaware that the collar no longer had Ollie attached to it because we were distracted.

"Ollie listens very well and has a good recall. She didn't wander far, and she was safe. If the situation was any different, I would not have made a video about it. She's such a goofy, fun dog and now her personality is shining online, and people love it."

After going viral and amassing more than 840 comments on TikTok already, plenty of internet users lauded Ollie's undeniable main character energy.

One comment reads: "she said this is not about me so i'm gonna make it about me."

Another TikToker wrote: "the way I LOST IT at the evil laugh."

While another person joked: "we are gonna need a harness on that little escape artist."
