Wife Goes to Get 'Groceries,' Surprises Husband With Something Else Instead
Elaine Buhs told her husband she was headed to the store, but she brought home something unexpected.
The plan was simple: a quick trip for essentials as the couple had returned from a trip to Florida. However, on the way home, Buhs made a detour to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, where she's been volunteering as a foster parent for more than a year.
When she returned home, she had bread, milk and Buddy, a nervous, 10-month-old Great Pyrenees mix.
Buhs filmed her escapade and shared the footage on TikTok, where it has since received more than 430,000 views. "Told my husband I was running to the grocery store and then I headed to the shelter to pick up a foster dog," she wrote in the video's text overlay.
In the caption, she added: "Our shelter is getting overcrowded with dogs, so I decided to pick up a foster. Four beautiful dogs came in under-socialized. One got adopted, one went to foster right away. There were two left, so I took this nervous nelly. I'm gonna lay by him all night and see how it goes."
When Buhs arrived at Animal Rescue League, she had intended to look for a small puppy or the dog that most needed a break from the shelter. The foster department pointed her toward Buddy, who was struggling in the shelter environment.
"They said there was a 10-month-old puppy that wasn't doing well in the shelter," Buhs told Newsweek. "He was very nervous and scared. They also said he'd probably have to be carried out of the shelter. I was like, 'OK, I'll take him.'"
It wasn't until later, when she saw Buddy, that Buhs realized what she'd signed up for. "When the staff hoisted him up, I was surprised to see he was the size of a small horse," she said.
Buddy came from a farm where he was part of an unwanted litter of puppies, and his life had been essentially devoid of human contact.
When they arrived home, Buhs struggled to coax the dog inside. After an hour and a half, she finally called her husband for help, and that was when he realized his wife had returned home with more than groceries.
His response, she recounted with a laugh, was as dry as it was bemused, "Did you get my lemonade?"
Buddy is acclimating to his temporary home, and Buhs wants to help him gain confidence. She's seen progress with other fosters and hopes Buddy will soon be ready for adoption.
She said, "He will be adoptable when he gets over his nervousness."
