Huge 70-Pound Puppy Still Determined To Be a Lapdog Delights Internet
A woman has gone viral for showing off her enormous dog who is determined to always sit in her lap.
Belle Fortson, 23, lives in South Carolina with her puppy, Marlow, who is a mix of two of the largest dog breeds: A Bernese Mountain Dog and Saint Bernard, who had an "accidental litter."
Bernards can grow up to 30 inches and weigh 180 pounds, according to the American Kennel Club, while Berneses can be 27.5 inches tall and 115 pounds.
It was a given Marlow was going to be a big dog, but as Fortson told Newsweek, at five months old, he already weighs around 70 pounds—and the 5 foot 4 inches woman added: "I'm not sure of his height, but he is almost my height when he stands up."
Despite his size, Marlow is a lapdog through-and-through, and can't get enough of climbing, lying and sitting on Fortson, as she admitted this was "entirely unexpected."
"I've had clingy dogs in the past, but Marlow is on a different level. He wants to be touching you at all times, and will sit and bark at you until you hug him or let him in your lap."
Fortson shared a snapshot of life with Marlow to her TikTok account @belle_fortson in November, which she called her "giant lapdog update," racking up almost 30,000 likes in the process.
The video shows her speaking to the camera while sitting in a chair, and sure enough Marlow is half-standing, half-lying against her lap. As she tells the camera Marlow's age, he tries to get even closer to her, until she eventually gets him up and on to her lap, holding him tight so he doesn't fall.
"I can't pick him up anymore on my own. But he does still want to sit in my lap all day. So you know, it's just really fun."
And she meant it, as she told Newsweek: "Personally, I love it! He is the sweetest, and after a long day it's so nice to curl up on the couch with him."
This is despite the fact she has learned she is "slightly allergic" to the dog—but it just means she's being "careful about putting my head on him."
TikTok users were completely enamored by the giant, cuddly puppy, as one commenter declared: "Not to be dramatic but I'd die for him."
"I would actually die of happiness and never leave my house," another insisted, while one wrote: "He's so tiny. Thimble sized in fact. I can't see the issue."
Fortson "never expected" her video to go viral, after sharing it just for her friends to see, but added: "I shouldn't be so surprised, Marlow is such a cute puppy! It's been so nice to see everyone with other big dogs who have had similar experiences."
As for anyone else thinking of getting a large dog, she had one important piece of advice: "Get a good vacuum."
She also recommended puppy training, as their trainer "set us up for success with owning a big dog and we were able to get him trained when he was still on the smaller side."
