Owner Unprepared for Where She Finds 70-Pound Dog After Put in 'Puppy Jail'

Needing a few moments alone to clean the house, a pet parent placed her pit bull mix in the basement but where she found the dog when she was done left viewers in stitches.

Lacey Banis, known on TikTok as @bearofbobandbug, learned the hard way that her 5-year-old pit bull mix, Dotty, won't stop following her around while trying to clean the house. Although that's sweet, it makes it hard for her to vacuum. Banis told Newsweek she's tried previously putting up barricades, which allowed Dotty to still stay upstairs with her, but they quickly got knocked down or Dotty would break through them.

"So putting her in our basement is usually the easiest and best for both of us," Banis said. "In the basement, she has room to spread out, her box of toys, a breathable cot with a blanket, which isn't out right now cause it had been warm."

In her clip posted earlier this week, Banis placed Dotty in the basement so she could clean. This time, however, Dotty wasn't having it with "puppy jail." The pet camera shows Dotty first sitting on her cot, with her head plopped down in disbelief that she'd been banished. That's when it dawned on her—time to escape.

When Banis finally finished, she went to get Dotty, but panic set in for a moment. She didn't spot the dog.

"My heart sank a little because when I went to get her and opened the door to the basement, I didn't see her, which really gave me a fright," Banis said. "For a split second, I wondered if she had somehow gotten into our garage, but then I quickly saw her."

Dotty contorted her body to fit inside her tiny toy bin. All 70 pounds of her. But her head still stuck out, so she placed it on another bin. Banis couldn't believe it, as Dotty had never done that before, but it left her cracking up.

Dotty's move from the cot surprised Banis because she usually gets an alert from the Ring camera whenever the dog moves. She usually never checks unless it's repeating the alert. Banis said she must've missed her getting up and moving.

But before she retrieved Dotty, she needed to pull out her camera. She couldn't stop laughing at how she fit in the tiny basket. Plus, she wanted the evidence; otherwise, her wife and daughter wouldn't have believed her.

While Banis was cracking up over Dotty's unusual napping spot, Dotty had no idea she was found. She is a deaf rescue pup the family adopted in 2022. Because she didn't hear Banis coming, Dotty was surprised to see her and find herself in the basket.

"I truly think she climbed in because she was trying to get something out and didn't realize the physics of her 70-lb frame and the size of the box," Banis said.

Thankfully, Dotty forgave her owners for "puppy jail" time. Banis gave her "extra treats and cuddles" because she felt bad about how sad Dotty looked in the box.

The TikTok clip amassed over 1.1 million views, 174,200 likes and 403 comments as of Friday. People were calling Dotty "dramatic" over her time in jail.

"She put herself in pretend time out to guilt you and fell asleep... been there," said a viewer.

Others demanded the owner put out blankets or get her a plush dog bed. Banis assured them Dotty always has plenty of blankets. She's just the "queen of drama."

Banis also received recommendations to crate her or use a tent, but given how scared she was after being adopted about things overhead like the ceiling fan, the family decided against it. It took the owners time to get Dotty comfortable sitting under the fan or to walk past streetlights.

"...so the idea of crating her or putting her in somewhere she'd have a roof directly over her wasn't ever something we'd consider," Banis said. "We have always followed her lead for what makes her feel safe."
