Mom-to-Be Bakes Gender Reveal Cake for Dog, but There's Just One Problem

A video featuring a pup's "confused" response to a dog-friendly gender reveal cake has drawn widespread attention and amusement on TikTok.

Posted by TikTok user @lizaleneecampana, the video has amassed an impressive 11.8 million views since it was shared on December 7.

In the clip, a note overlaid on the video humorously states: "When you spend 2 days baking a dog-friendly cake for your gender reveal and he won't even eat it."

The footage shows a dog—who appears to be a golden retriever, based on a previous video shared by the poster—donning a bib that says "Big brother." The pup is seated in front of a table with a cake with white frosting. Despite repeated encouragement from a voice behind the camera urging him to "eat it," the dog gazes blankly at the cake, showing no interest in taking a bite.

The dog's reaction is surprising, considering that canines are generally known for their enthusiastic appetite. This behavior is attributed to genetics, according to a Cambridge University study published in May 2016 in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Eleanor Raffan, a co-author of the study, said: "There is some hard-wired biology behind that persistent food-seeking behavior," according to a Guardian story at the time of the study's release.

The study found that some Labradors have a DNA mutation predisposing them to weight gain. Labradors were found to have the highest documented obesity prevalence among the dog breeds studied and were identified as more food-motivated.

The research also linked a deletion in the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) gene to "increased body weight, adiposity [obesity] and food motivation in Labrador retrievers as well as the closely related flat-coat retrievers," the study said.

'Performance Anxiety'

The viral clip has captivated TikTok viewers, who expressed their amusement in the comments section.

Taylor Atchison Photo said: "He said 'I don't want a baby... I'm THE baby.'" User Sleazynik echoed similar sentiments, writing: "He said I like being an only child and do not support this."

Other users humorously weighed in, with April Beth writing, "He's like, 'did I ask for a sibling?'" MykoMushroom said the dog is "NOT interested in big brotherhood."

E suggested the dog might be thinking, "Too much pressure Mom," while kduuhh515 attributed the reaction to "performance anxiety."

Samantha Strick summed it up with "He's like 'this is a trick.'" And @aboutthelordjesuschrist observed: "He's soooo confused."

Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. The video has not been independently verified.
