Woman Has Dog Instead of Babies To Avoid 'Tantrums'âDoesn't Go As Planned
A woman from Baltimore, Maryland, got a dog instead of having babies to avoid dealing with temper tantrums, but it turns out that her pup is just as spoiled as a child.
In a viral TikTok video shared in October under the username @rustythegoodboygsd, the poster can be seen hugging her German shepherd as layover text reads: "Getting a dog instead of a human baby to avoid a temper tantrums."
In the following clip, however, the pup can be seen sitting at the back of the car, howling nonstop like a child who can't get his way. "My Dog every time we pull into Starbucks [because] he expects a pup cup," the text continues. "I should have known a German shepherd always brings the drama," reads the caption.
Jasmine Sami told Newsweek that, since she started Rusty's Instagram in January 2024, she loves sharing his playful adventures and her passion for the breed. "Through videos and photos, I love showcasing the unique personality and charm of German shepherds, and Rusty's pup cup obsession is just part of it," Sami said.
Temper tantrums are not uncommon among dogs, especially puppies, but they can be overwhelming for both the canine and their owner. They usually happen when you force your pup to do something they are not in the mood for or when they are not getting their way.
If this sounds like your dog, don't worry; these unwanted behaviors can be fixed with time and patience, although may sometimes require expert help.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) says a positive reward-based training will set them up for success, teaching them that good things happen when they do as you ask.
Keeping them active with lots of exercise will also keep them satisfied and less likely to act out. Consistency with your training is what makes the difference in the long run.
The AKC also offers more specific advice for dogs' destructive behaviors. If your pup likes chewing on stuff, giving them edible chews or chew toys will keep them from ruining your furniture.
If your dog jumps on people visiting you, it might be appropriate to crate them whenever someone is coming around. If your pup insists on pulling the leash, don't pull them; instead, stop walking and redirect by reversing and calling them back to you.
For excessive barking, you can teach them a "quiet" command, giving them treats and praise every time they listen.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 603,000 views and more than 77,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Lisa Y, commented: "You picked the wrong breed if you were trying to avoid tantrums [German shepherds] are giant babies."
Sierra posted: "At least your [German shepherds] talks, mine just stares into my soul like I've committed the worst betrayal."
Angela added: "Mine literally follows me around all morning listing his complaints and rushing me out the door so he can get his biscuit."
