Cocker Spaniel Devastated After Realizing How Advent Calendar Works

The internet has fallen head-over-heels for a dog who discovered the joy of advent calendars—and the pain of only getting one treat a day.

Milo the English show cocker spaniel lives in Lancashire, England, with his owner Rachel, 30, and her fiance, James, after becoming part of the family in 2022.

"This is the second advent calendar we have got him, last year he wasn't as fussed, but this year he is obsessed," Rachel, who gave her first name only, told Newsweek, after a video of Milo's obsession with the calendar went viral.

Advent calendars are a popular Christmas tradition starting from December 1, where each morning you open the door of a calendar to find a treat behind it. For humans, this treat is usually chocolate—and for Milo, it's a little dog treat.

Each morning, Rachel told Newsweek, Milo "runs downstairs in the morning and sits directly under it, wanting a treat, and cries when he's had it as he wants more."

A sweet video shared to Rachel's TikTok account, @rachelferris8, in December, showed Milo staring at his advent calendar, and repeatedly letting out sad-sounding whimpers.

Giving Rachel a dose of the ultimate puppy-dog eyes, he then goes back to staring at the calendar—in the shape of a Christmas tree—and whines gently, but is sadly told, "No."

"When you have to wait until the next day for your next treat," Rachel wrote across the clip, and added in a caption: "He's worse than a child. The temptation to give him the whole lot is too much."

She told Newsweek that Milo didn't quite get his way, but she "got him a Rich Tea biscuit [cookie] instead."

"Thought if I gave in with the advent calendar, I'd end up giving him all 24 days' worth!"

TikTok users loved the clip, viewed over 700,000 times, with one writing simply: "I love dogs man," and one calling Milo a "poor tortured baby."

And one admitted they wouldn't be strong enough to deny their dog treats, writing: "I cannot have a dog. It would end up like a BARREL."

Another asked if Milo's reaction was a "cocker thing to cry like that and be held like a child, mine's the exact same."

Rachel told Newsweek she set up her TikTok account to have memories to look back on, and for a "bit of fun," but never expected how big her video of Milo would get.

"I originally took the video to send to my fiance's Nana as I had told her about him crying for [the advent calendar], then just decided to upload it," she said.

"Woke up the next morning to thousands of notifications!"

Describing her beloved pet, she said Milo is "the cuddliest boy, loves being held like in the video, and as soon as you sit on the sofa, he's on your knee falling asleep."
