While one woman's neighbor thought they were doing a good deed by leaving food out for the birds, the internet has been left in hysterics after learning who has really been stealing the bread all this time.

Abigail Haelig, 22, shared a hilarious post on TikTok (@abbyhae) to reveal that her neighbors often put pieces of bread outside for the birds, but as it turns out, a certain four-legged thief has been eating most of it. The owner, from Pennsylvania, shared several incriminating pictures of her chihuahua and Jack Russell mix, named Leia, holding pieces of bread in her mouth after wandering into the neighbor's yard.

Indeed, this hasn't just happened once or twice either, as Haelig tells Newsweek that she thinks it's been "happening for over five years." She's even learned to spot the telltale signs that Leia, 11, is going on a thieving spree as the mischievous pup usually starts sniffing around the yard and then heads straight next door.

"As far as I know, Leia steals the bread every time it's put out—I would say she brings bread to the house once every two months," Haelig said. "We can tell that there is bread out because she can smell it immediately and heads straight to the neighbor's yard.

"When we see her sniffing around in the neighbor's yard, it's a good indication that there's food out there. So, if we can't find her, the neighbor's backyard is a good place to start. She sees us coming and either runs away or tries to down it before we can get to her."

After the dog's lawlessness was revealed online, the post has gone viral with over 427,000 views and more than 102,800 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. Fortunately for her, internet users have lauded her antics and even praised her for taking the bread, which can be harmful to birds anyway. As they say, finders keepers after all.

Leia hasn't shown any remorse for what she's done and sometimes she even takes the evidence back to the house to enjoy. She really has no shame, and there's one thing for certain: she doesn't share her food with anyone.

Meanwhile, Haelig says that her neighbors have no idea that the dog has been stealing all the bread they put outside.

"Leia has such a big personality, and this is one of her many antics that goes on in the house. We have two other dogs, but she's the only one that beelines for the yard when she smells bread," she continued.

Since posting about the four-legged bread thief on TikTok, Haelig has been amazed by the response it generated. She never imagined that her dog's mischief would capture so much attention, but she's glad the culprit could make so many people laugh and smile.

Haelig told Newsweek: "The reaction online is adorable. People say she's doing a good deed because bread isn't good for birds anyways, so I'm happy to see that others find Leia as entertaining as we do."

The viral TikTok post has amassed over 200 comments so far, as one person wrote: "give her all the bread in the world."

Another TikToker responded: "In another life, she lives in Paris and walks to the local bakery for a baguette every morning."

While one comment reads: "bread is so bad for birds, what a good girl to protect them!"
