Dog Sees Baby Gate for the First Time, Owner Not Prepared for What He Does

A throwback video of a dog's reaction to seeing a baby gate for the first time has viewers cracking up all over again.

Last holiday season, Alyssa, known on TikTok as @the.working.wags, went to her dad's house with Basil, her German shepherd. This was the first time Basil saw a baby gate. She doesn't use them in her household, but she was still curious how Basil would react.

"We decided to test run it. I put him in the living room, walked out, and recorded to see what he would do!" Alyssa told Newsweek via TikTok.

Basil didn't like the thought of Alyssa leaving him, even if she only went to stand in the next room. Within seconds of stepping out, Basil made it her mission to break free of the room and bypass the baby gate. She ran full speed ahead toward the closed gate and effortlessly leaped over in the TikTok video, which was posted once again on November 30.

"He definitely was just curious about where I was headed," she said. "He was so excited once over it."

But since his great escape last year, Basil has never done it again, Alyssa said. This was the one and only time he jumped over the baby gate. He just needed to know he could do it in case of an emergency.

"My dad has a handful of kiddos so someone kept an eye on him while we cooked," she said. "Not once did he hop the gate again last or this year. I think once he realized it wasn't as fun and I was just in the next room it didn't appeal to him as much!"

TikTok users flooded the video with hundreds of comments and the video garnered over 1.1 million views as of Tuesday.

They claimed dogs can never "take a hint." Basil saw the closed gate and thought "challenge accepted," as one viewer wrote.

Another added: "He said: 'You can't keep me trapped here human.'"

Others shared their similar experiences: "We've had a baby gate up since before we even had our dog, she leaped it ONCE when the family got McDonald's and has never done it any other time."
