Internet Obsessed With Cat's Oscar-Worthy Performance: 'So Dramatic'
A cat owner from Germany shared a video of her feline playing dead on social media, and now internet users are demanding the pet is given an Oscar for his brilliant performance.
In a viral TikTok clip shared on Thursday under the username @antoninusandstella, the feline is chilling by the Christmas tree when his owner pretends to shoot him with her hands, mimicking the sound of a gun going off. Immediately, the cat joins in the play, falling to the floor, belly up, as if he had been shot for real.
"Give him an Oscar right now." reads layover text in the clip. A caption says: "Can [your] cat play dead? I don't think so." Newsweek reached out to @antoninusandstella for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.
Cats can be great actors; in fact, they are no strangers to movie sets. Our feline friends have been featured in some of the most famous films, include Breakfast at Tiffany's, Ghost, La Dolce Vita, Alien, The Hangover, and even The Godfather, to name a few.
But how are cats trained for their roles? Pet wellness and lifestyle website Pet Life CA says that felines are among the hardest animals to train, even harder than skunks, birds and buffalos.
Training a feline requires incredible patience, but also the right conditions. The cat must be happy in their environment to thrive, so animal coordinators on movie sets must ensure that studio temperature, cast and crew interactions, and the moving of objects aren't a nuisance to the cat.
Because all cats have different personalities, choosing the right one for the role is essential. They can be trained to walk on a leash, to be comfortable around dogs, to touch objects with their nose, to hiss, to stand water and to problem-solve.
The presence of an animal welfare organization representative is required in most movies featuring pets.
The main tools used in their training include a clicker and lots of treats to reward the desired behavior.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 2.5 million views and more than 339,000 likes on the platform.
One user, ABCmath2000, commented: "And the Oscar goes to …"
Elvis wrote: "I think he deserves some treats as well as an Oscar."
Jennifer posted: "He's so dramatic."
Keilah added: "The cat could play as an actor."
