Hysterics at Chihuahua's Response to Particular Sound: 'Conditioned'
The owner of a tiny Chihuahua was left mortified when she realized the dog had learned to recognize the sound of the PlayStation—and, most importantly, what it means.
Harold the Chihuahua has become an overnight social media star after his owner shared a short clip on the TikTok page that she has dedicated to all things Harold: @hardolthechichi.
In the video, she is playing the console under a blanket on the sofa, Harold curled up beside her in a state of complete relaxation.
But as she presses the off button, and the shutdown noise of the console plays, Harold is up like a shot, flipping over onto his belly and then standing on the edge of his seat, ears perked and tail up, ready for an adventure.
He then leaps off the sofa and begins pacing back and forth quickly, staring expectantly at his owner.
She wrote on the clip: "Hate that my dog knows we're about to do something when I turn the PS5 off."
And TikTok users related in a big way, with Harold's 15-second clip racking up over 2.4 million views and over 380,000 likes since being shared on November 15.
One user shared: "I started muting my TV before turning it off, then my dog learned the whirring noises of the machine going quiet meant the same thing."
"My dog does this when he sees me put on pants," another admitted, while one wrote: "This is my dog if my phone rings because he thinks grandma is pulling up and calling to tell me she is here."
It's not just dogs who have been conditioned to react to the PlayStation noise in this way, as one woman revealed: "I was also classically conditioned to this noise in my last relationship."
Classical conditioning, also known as associative learning, is a process where something is learned unknowingly, as described by a publication in the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
It was discovered and made famous in the 1890s by Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov, who rang a bell before his dogs were fed. He realized the dogs would salivate at the sound of the bell without any food present, as they had learned to associate the noise with food.
While some TikTok commenters were concerned Harold's owner was gaming too much and not spending time with the dog, Harold's TikTok page is filled with the tiny rescue Chihuahua on adventures.
Clips shared to the account show him on walks in a meadow, through fields and on the beach, being a pampered passenger on car rides, and being showered with love, treats and attention.
