Hearts Melt As Puppies Rescued From Kill Shelter Become Best Friends
A dog foster carer who rescued two dogs from euthanasia has melted hearts online by sharing the sweet bond the canines have formed.
In a viral video shared on TikTok in November by a poster with the username @madisynschmitz, the two pups are filmed before and after being rescued, going from sad and hopeless to happy and playful, with a newly-found love of life together.
"This 4 month old puppy was completely shut down in this high-kill shelter," reads layover text, as the post plays footage of the pitbull, called Juno.
"Insert Bambi, a three-legged pup who suffered abuse by humans and finds comfort in dogs. [...] Decided to bring them both home to foster because they were at risk of euthanasia. Clearly the right decision. Adopt don't shop."
An article on pet blog Hepper, reviewed by vetinarian Dr. Lorna Whittemore, says that while dogs don't have the need to play with other dogs, interaction with other canines can indeed be beneficial for their physical and mental well-being.
Playtime with dogs or other pets, can help your fur-baby learn new social cues, and allow them to burn excess energy.
Not all dogs will get along with other canines, and even for those who do, sometimes play can become too overwhelming and it can quickly turn into aggression.
That's why, unless the pups live together or have been friends for a long time, their interactions should always be supervised, so you can identify any signs of aggression before things turn ugly.
If you notice one of the dogs suddenly snapping, flattening their ears, or retreating and then hunching over, you may want to intervene before things get too heated. Calling the dogs to distract them is usually enough to resolve the tension.
However, if the aggression is a recurring issue, you should contact a veterinarian on a pet behaviorist to help address it.
If you decide to get a second dog for your pup, make sure you introduce them the right way to set them up for success, starting with a long walk on loose leaches so they have chance to suss each other out.
The video of the foster pups quickly playing together with their tails wagging in happiness went viral on social media. So far it has received over 677,000 views and 152,300 likes on the platform.
One user, Carmen, commented: "Such a perfect ending."
Brooke Varland said: "Yet again another person that restores my faith in society."
Zionna added: "Their bond is so special. what sweet babies."
