How Hamster Gets to Bed Every Night Delights Internet: 'Scaling Everest'
An endearing video featuring a pet hamster diligently climbing up the stairs to go to bed has captured the hearts of viewers has gone viral on TikTok.
TikTok user @coasterchris_ shared the charming footage of the tiny hamster's nightly ritual, which has amassed over 447,000 views since it was posted on December 9.
The video begins with a note overlaid on the clip reading "Our hamster is off up to bed."
The footage shows the determined little hamster steadily climbing each step of a carpeted stairway.
"There she goes again," a voice off-camera comments as the hamster navigates the stairs, stopping to lean against the wall at one point. "Having a rest," the voice notes affectionately before encouraging the pet. "You've really got the hang of this now...you're quicker than me up the stairs," the voice says, as the hamster finally reaches the top.
In response to viewer concerns, the poster said in a later comment "Just to clarify we keep a very close eye on her and don't let her climb the stairs as a rule."
According to the Humane Society of the United States, most hamsters kept as pets in the U.S. descend from a family of Syrian (golden) hamsters captured in the wild in 1930. These hamsters, like their modern counterparts, are known for their ability to escape from enclosures and their curious nature. Despite their appeal as pets, nearly 100,000 hamsters are used in harmful tests and experiments each year, the nonprofit notes.
The Humane Society emphasizes that pet hamsters need more than just a clean cage, food and water. They require plenty of litter to dig in, tubes to crawl through, soft paper or cardboard for nests, a running wheel for exercise, and daily supervised playtime outside their cages.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), an animal charity based in the United Kingdom, says that hamsters require undisturbed sleep during the day and ample space for nighttime exercise.
While running wheels are beneficial, they shouldn't be the hamster's only form of enrichment. Hamsters benefit from predictable lighting times and should be kept in rooms where the lights aren't on late at night, the RSPCA says.
For their safety, the U.K. charity warns "Always supervise your hamster if you let them out of their cage (when they've become tame) to make sure they don't stray or get up to mischief.
"If you have another pet, such as a dog or cat, make sure your hamster is safe from them. Never leave your hamster out of its cage unattended or overnight," the U.K. charity adds.
