Internet Obsessed With Senior Cat's Christmas Tradition After Being Rescued
It's that time of the year when TikTok is inundated with Christmas-related pet content. But this video of Ella, the rescued cat, doesn't involve feline wrecking a decorative tree, as you might expect.
Instead, the footage, which has gathered more than 1.6 million views on TikTok (@ellawatchestv_), shows the senior cat enjoying the animated 2018 film The Grinch—so much so, it has become a tradition in her Orlando, Florida, home.
The much-loved movie, about a green, furry character created by children's author and cartoonist Dr. Seuss, follows a grumpy figure who hates this time of the year. But he learns the true meaning of the holiday after attempting to ruin it for the joyful Whos of Whoville.
Newsweek reached out to @ellawatchestv_ for comment via email. We could not verify the details of the case.
A 2022 YouGov survey found that The Grinch is enjoyed by 87 percent of 1,000 U.S. adult citizens, with a further 91 percent stating they like or love How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the 2000 live-action film starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch.
But the 15-year-old cat's love for the character doesn't stop there. According to the on-screen text, Ella is a huge fan who has a collection of memorabilia, courtesy of her owner Emily Beck.
During the montage of clips, Ella can be seen sniffing a smaller Grinch stuffed toy and kneading a jumbo-sized one. The heartwarming video ends with the cat curled up and sleeping on the Grinch's chest. "Just look how happy she is," says the text.
One comment with over 14,000 likes read: "not her laying where the grinches heart would be."
"The grinch heart was so small cause he didn't have a kitty like her!!" added another.
According to a third comment, the film appeals to more cats. One owner said: "Ok, this had to be a thing because MY CAT IS OBSESSED WITH IT TOO! He'll just sit and watch the whole thing!!"
Last year, Beck told Newsweek that Ella's favorite film is the 2018 version, and that is how she realized her cat was genuinely interested in the TV.
Beck said: "About a month after adopting her, I was working multiple jobs, so when I came home, I would put on the TV to relax before a nap. Once I put on the movie Abominable and later, The Grinch, I realized she had this silly quirk!"
"I had no idea she would be so animated and silly. If this is what makes her happy, I'm happy to do it forever," Beck added.
