Heartbreaking Reason Why Woman Lets Her Rescue Dog Eat Food From Her Plate

A pet owner has revealed the heartbreaking reason why she now lets her senior rescue dog eat the food from her plate.

It's not uncommon for dog owners to feed their pups table scraps. In a survey of 1,200 dog owners who use the BarkHappy mobile app, over 60 percent admitted to feeding their pets table scraps or bites of their own food.

However, around half of these people admitted to feeling guilty about doing so. Amber Snyder from Tennessee, however, has no qualms about feeding her beloved senior rescue dog Lucy her leftover macaroni and cheese or any other of her meals for that matter.

She shared a video of Lucy enjoying the leftover pasta to her TikTok, theamberharding. The video went viral, amassing over 300,000 views for reasons that were clear to anyone watching.

Lucy has been a part of Snyder's life since June 2009. "I found Lucy on the side of the road near my parents' home in Indiana," Snyder told Newsweek. "She was a puppy—only about 8 weeks old—and someone had dumped her."

Lucy had wormed and was badly malnourished, but Snyder was smitten. "I fell in love with her immediately and decided to keep her," Snyder said.

She took Lucy to live with her in her college apartment in Knoxville and they have been together ever since. "She's the best dog I've ever known," Snyder said. "Over the years, we've loved to go on adventures together—hiking, camping, traveling. She was also an amazing Frisbee player in her prime."

As she reached the elderly dog age of 15, Lucy remained a happy and active pup. "People couldn't believe her age," Snyder said. However, everything changed in late September when Lucy was diagnosed with oral fibrosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer.

Lucy's illness has, understandably, hit Snyder hard. "She's nearing her end of life now, and the thought of losing my constant companion is gut wrenching. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do," she said.

However, she is determined to make the most of whatever time they have left together and let Lucy do all of the things she's wanted to do in the past but not always been allowed—like eating off of her mom's plate.

"In the time we have left, I'm loving on her, spoiling her rotten and letting her taste all the delicious foods, like the mac & cheese you saw in the video," Snyder said. "She is the best girl. I'm so blessed to be her mom."

Those experiences go beyond food though. "She has always loved the beach, so last month my husband Mike and I drove her 13 hours down to Florida to spend a week," Snyder said. "It was so much fun watching her roll in the sand and swim in the water like she was a puppy again."

Whatever comes next, Snyder believes it's important to "make the most" of the next few months and "shower her with love." If that involves sharing a few meals here and there, she's more than happy to do it.
