What Man Finds Asleep on Apartment's Fire Alarm Delights Internetâ'New Pet'
An unusual animal was filmed by a couple sleeping on top of the fire alarm box in their apartment building, and internet users are demanding that they house it.
In a video shared on TikTok in November by @domsciortino, the poster walks up to the fire alarm box outside his apartment, where a fluffy small bird can be seen nestled against the red plastic box, taking a relaxing nap.
"This little bird sleeps on top of the fire alarm outside of our apartment every night," reads layover text in the clip. And a caption continues: "Every morning he's gone and every night he comes back to sleep in the same spot."
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 351,700 views and 31,200 likes on the platform.
You've probably rarely seen one asleep but all birds actually need to rest to function properly throughout the day, although the logistics of it may differ among species, life stages, and even times of the year.
Most birds sleep six to twelve hours or more every day or night, depending on their specific sleeping cycle, says bird expert blog Bird Facts.
Because it can be dangerous for them to sleep in the wild, they have developed the ability to sleep in the most unusual places, including branches and other elevated places like buildings, cliffs, and telephone lines.
Keeping warm is also crucial for a bird's survival. Their ideal body temperature is between 40 and 42 degrees centigrade (around 106 degrees Fahrenheit), and if they get too cold they may suffer complications from hypothermia.
The video received over 600 comments, with viewers asking the poster to do something about the little bird, which they claimed to be a wren.
One use, Lovelife79, said: "That would somehow be my new pet bird."
Cece wrote: "Make her a birdhouse and put it up there. A roof, sides, no bottom."
And Melon's got a Range Rover added: "Little wren. I have one that tucks into the corner of my porch every year. Just let it be and it will return."
In the comments, the poster explained that he is not allowed to build a house on the fire alarm for safety reasons, but he did come up with a different idea to help the little birdie.
"We've compromised by putting one on our balcony," he said in the comments.
