Couple Introduce Labrador to Their Newborn Baby—Unprepared for His Response

Many first-time parents can't wait to bring their baby home and introduce the little one to their beloved dog, but one new dad told Newsweek how he was surprised to find his black Labrador really couldn't have cared less about the new addition.

Bryan Arteen, 24, shared a video on TikTok of the moment he and his wife, Neive Arteen, 25, returned home with their baby daughter, Macy. As Neive cradled the newborn in her arms, Bryan went to get Gus the Labrador and bring him into the room. They were hoping it would be a magical moment they would cherish, but the pup wasn't feeling it.

After taking one quick look at his new human sibling, Gus quickly looked elsewhere for something more interesting instead. He was much less enthusiastic than the new parents were expecting, as Bryan, from Saint Augustine, told Newsweek that Gus "basically acted like the baby was never there."

The new dad couldn't resist sharing footage of the hilarious moment on TikTok (@bryanarteen) and it delighted social media users. In just a matter of days, the clip has generated more than 1.3 million views and 174,300 likes at the time of writing.

"Gus is a very sweet dog who's extra careful around puppies and kids," Bryan said. "Although he's never seen babies, we figured he would be excited to sniff the baby and give her attention because, throughout the pregnancy, he was attached to Neive and the nursery. But that was clearly not the case.

He continued: "He was super excited to see me, and I let him sniff Macy's hospital blanket prior to bringing him home. As soon as Gus came in the apartment, he went to Neive to say hello and gave the baby a quick sniff for one second and that was all."

Bryan and Neive aren't concerned however, as they know that Gus will come around eventually.

In fact, after they made it through the first day, he started to show more interest in Macy. Bryan explained that he would occasionally watch her sleep and sometimes even lie near her for his own hard-earned naps.

"Gus has no issue with us all snuggled up in the couch being right in the middle alongside Macy," Bryan told Newsweek. "He is still unbothered, but he will occasionally come up and give her sniffs and lay his head on the couch right by her. When we are all together as a family, he curls up right next to Macy."

Since posting the clip on TikTok, Bryan has been amazed by the online reaction to it. Becoming a father and going viral wasn't what he had imagined, but internet users can't get enough of his totally unfazed Labrador.

With over 560 comments on the TikTok video at the time of writing, many people have lauded Gus for being so relaxed and "not caring" about the tiny new family member.

One comment reads: "Gus realized she didn't have any treats for him."

Another TikToker wrote: "I aspire to be Gus' level of unbothered."

While another person joked: "Gus: thank you, next."
